You also don't die at 40 when you retire from the NHL. There's another 40-50 years left to go. Plus your whole family, kids, future generations etc.

If you are a grounded individual, how much money does one really need to make? Sure others have done it, its always easy to get suckered in for money and it may not be the norm to go for less. This is what impresses the heck out of me about this guy. he followed his heart.
You dont think he gets a job with the org? Look at Alfie with the Sens.

If Tavares had of signed with Tampa or Boston leafs would of been (frank)ed for years - HealthyScratch6
Especially Tampa Bay. The whole Eastern Conference would have been (frank)ed for years. That's Golden State Warrior level of (frank)ery we're talking about here.

The only real question was whether or not he wanted the attention. If that didn't bother him it was an easy choice.

deep fcukishness for sure, but not Golden State level. Much easier to accomplish that in the NBA.

Agreed but I don't give a poop about the rest of the eastern conference

As much as you can possibly get. These guys spend their entire lives dedicated to doing one thing at an elite level. They're athletes who endure tremendous amounts of pain and suffering to prepare themselves for the hardest seasons and playoffs in all of sports. Outside of MMA, there isn't a sport that requires the sacrifices that playing in the NHL does. So yeah, these guys should be getting every last dollar they can get especially when the government is taking half of it and they can only earn that amount within a short period of time. They can't make it when they're 50 or 60.
And yes, it's much more impressive that he turned everything else down to play for the Leafs but it doesn't make him a little stupid / crazy for doing so because the decisions made in the past by other players has almost literally been the complete opposite every single time until now. And for that, I'll always be a fan of his.

I think with all the young star players we have here, it won't be so bad as it would've been years ago, like even for Kessel.
Tavares will have a lot of (mostly positive) attention now and early next season while we're still getting over the fact HE SIGNED WITH THE LEAFS!!! HAHAHAHAH, sorry, got carried away. After that time period though, there are other people to help shoulder the media's attention, like Matthews, Marner, Willy, Reilly, even Marleau and Kadri.

I think it was James O'neil who is said it, but thats a bit overblown about playing here.
Last thread I was saying that a co-woker had actually seen Tavares at the Shops on Don Mills a few weekends ago, and went relatively undetected...cept by him of course.
There's no way if they signed tavares they could keep all those players. Probably wouldn't of signed McDonough and would of had yo get rid of a few others.

Johnson, Callahan, Killorn, even Palat all could have gone. Girardi and Coburn are off the books next year, signing McDonagh would have got their money and Sergachev is still on ELC.
Yzerman knew what he had. He wouldn't have been on it if he couldn't fit the 11 million and keep the important players too. It could have been done. Wouldn't have been easy or without sacrifice but it wouldn't be impossible like Pittsburgh or Washington for example.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was offering stamkos money and pushing the low tax/winning.

Even at 11 per year, if they get rid of Killorn and retain half of Callahan's contract, he fits. McDonagh's extension kicks in next year and he would have got Coburn and/or Girardi's money. It could have worked. If it couldn't, Yzerman wouldn't have even bothered.

Hey guys,
Remember when we got Tavares because in the end, he just wanted to play for his hometown Leafs. Even though Uggy the retard said it was unpossible?
Holy (frank) we got Tavares.
I read the news on the 5th tee deck.
I went from 1 over par after 4 holes, to shooting a fun 104 because I just didn't give a flying (frank) ... We got Tavares.

Yzerman surely had a plan. I wouldn't be too surprised if he was offering JT a little less money, but surely he had a plan to move non essential players to make it work. My biggest fear was Tavares going to Tampa.

You and I are not hockey players, so you are making some assumptions there, which is why you were getting the heat you did...you also need to drop the whole taxes thing. There are probably a ton of perks the general public are not aware about in playing for the leafs that can offset dollar amount of compensation...like access to some kick ass accountants
I myself have taken a cut in pay before to be somewhere I wanted to be for the experience....mind you its a bit easier when you have a spouse that brings in income and the ammount wasnt that huge...just meant I didnt go out for lunch as much and cut back on my timmies habbit which wasnt a bad thing in the end.
