Someone in the buffalo thread suggests to offer sheet Nylander for 8 million a year. They think the leads will match and not take the compensatory draft picks..

Leafs are looking at Rick Nash on a 1 year deal.
If Nash decides to play one extra season, Toronto would be on top of his list next to Columbus.
1 year on a contract below 5million.

Good fit on that Kadri line with Brown.

Low risk deal for Toronto - if it works out, Nash gets a final chance to win a Stanley Cup.
If it doesn't work out, they'll just LTIR him and at the end of the season he'll retire anyways.

We really should try to get ourselves another top 4 defenseman (top pairing obviously would be even better). Maybe now is actually the time to package some prospects/picks for someone? Doesn't seem like we'll be getting what we need via FA, at least not this year.

Rielly
Tavares
Kadri
Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Marleau
Brown
Hyman
Dermott
Andersen
(Liljegren)
(Zaitsev)

are guys that I think Leafs will not want to move at all.
I'm quite sure Zaitsev and Liljegren are part of that core as well, just because the lack of d-depth.

That leaves:

Gardiner - Kapanen - Johnsson - Sparks - Pickard - Bracco - Gauthier - Carrick - Leivo - Borgman - Rosen - Grundstrom - Nielsen - Holl
1st rounders next 3 years
2nd rounders next 3 years

as your 'trade assets'.

apart from the first 3 players and the 1st rounders, there's not alot of value there for a rebuilding team.

Hard to believe Ottawa would take a package of Gardiner + Johnsson + 2 1sts for Karlsson.
Leafs would probably not do that either, since thát would really put them in a difficult cap position.

What would Wpg (Myers) or Anaheim (Manson) be interested in?
I just don't see something there for them.

Maybe Carolina (Pesce, Slavin or Fleury) or Minnesota (Spurgeon / Brodin).

Will be interesting to see what Leafs will do on D.

If nothing's there to really make a good move, might as well keep the current D and add another good 2nd/3rd line forward on a 1year deal.

Marleau, goodbye. Andersen, goodbye.

Done.

But the value of players on the ice, that's a different story.

Then again, it is Montreal and they'd probably take Nylander for Price and put him at center and wonder why they come in last a year later.

Andersen and Nylander for Price? Who does it? I think I would.

I've barely back read, im completely wasted and just about to go to bed finally. But I seen UG completely ignored the fact he was wrong the whole time, and instantly changed the topic to how we should go for Karlsson now. Holy (frank) boys, I don't even know what to say. Good night.

John Tavares is a (frank)ing Maple Leaf!!!!

- daeth

I can’t believe Matthews is a Leaf.

AND SO IS TAVARES!

Leafs have two top-10 centres in the NHL. Our top line center is a 40 goal, point per game guy.

Our second line center is a 30 goal, point per game guy.

Our third line center is a 30 goal, 60 point, shutdown guy.

Beast in the East.

There are 8 centres in the NHL who have scored at least 30 goals in 2 of the last 3 seasons...

The Leafs have 3 of them...

Matthews: 8 years at 9.5mln --> 76million contract - similar to JT.
Marner: 8 years at 8.25 million --> 66million contract
Nylander: 8 years at 7.25million --> 58million contract

25 million for the young star forwards.
11 million for Tavares
6.25 for Marleau
4.5 for Kadri
2.25 for Hyman
2.1 for Brown
1.5 for Kapanen
1.3 for Johnsson

that's total of 53.8mln for forward group 10 players (going after coming season).
Add 3 guys at 1million; 57million rounded.

5 million for Freddy and 1.5million for a backup.

63.5million.
Assuming cap goes to 82million season after nexty, that leaves 18.5million for defense.

Rielly: 5million
Zaitsev: 4.5million
Dermott: 1million

that's 10.5 million for those 3 d-men.

8million left for 4 d-men for the 2019-2020 season (after which Marleau is off the books).

That's quite doable.
