Matthews: 8 years at 9.5mln --> 76million contract - similar to JT.
Marner: 8 years at 8.25 million --> 66million contract
Nylander: 8 years at 7.25million --> 58million contract
25 million for the young star forwards.
11 million for Tavares
6.25 for Marleau
4.5 for Kadri
2.25 for Hyman
2.1 for Brown
1.5 for Kapanen
1.3 for Johnsson
that's total of 53.8mln for forward group 10 players (going after coming season).
Add 3 guys at 1million; 57million rounded.
5 million for Freddy and 1.5million for a backup.
63.5million.
Assuming cap goes to 82million season after nexty, that leaves 18.5million for defense.
8million left for 4 d-men for the 2019-2020 season (after which Marleau is off the books).
That's quite doable. - MaximusAurelius
Just curious - are you counting on Matthews, Nylander and Marner to all take discounts to play for the leafs? All those contracts are low, especially with the cap going up.
Hope the leafs are interested in dehaan and duclair. Might be a tough fit for cdh though with 3 left d already. Maybe a contingency plan for moving Gardiner

We have to be super careful with UFA signings now with term.
Ideally we can overpay for 1-year tryouts and then flip any duds at the deadline, but I see the term given out and I have flashbacks to Martin's deal.
Albeit very hard to say, and the way uggie presented it was a bit bent, the bottom line of his crazy rhetoric is that this seldom happens, and he kinda is right...but frank that noise, he is a leaf! It also speaks volumes of his character. He chose passion over money, but in the same breath torn inside about leaving the org that drafted him which shows his sense of loyalty.

I don't think these are discounts.
Maybe Matthews 0.5mln/1mln discount.
Look at the NHL top salaries.
Apart from McDavid, Eichel and Draisaitl, no young players over 8mln/year.
McDavid gets the extra million / million and half for playing in Edm; similar for Draisaitl.
Buffalo gives an additional 1million to Eichel for having to play in windowless Buffalo.
Matthews, Marner, Nylander can guarantee their life earnings signing an 8y deal now. Those numbers are very fair. After those deals, still can make some additional 3-5 years of good money.
I don't think Matthews will get a total contract worth more than Tavares.
Nylander probably signs below 7million, even if more than 5years.

AM will be interesting. I dont think he is McDavid good, but he is pretty effing close...His contract may end up in fact be equal to Tavares if they have a hope in hell of keeping him. I often wonder about does it bother him that he is playing on a Canadian team (and does he have the same feealings about Arizona as JT does witht he leafs).
Im hopeful Mitchy takes a page out of JTs book and takes a bit less to stay home and be part of something special over the next 5-7 years.
Willie IMO is the wildcard here. He is good and all, but feel at times he can be one dimensional..heaven forbid he takes a check.

Matt Martin is in demand on trade market. Seriously. Following payment of his $1.5M signing bonus by Leafs (likely yesterday), acquiring club would owe him $750,000 this year and $1.75M next year. Cap hit is $2.5M per.
