Maybe Matthews 0.5mln/1mln discount.

Look at the NHL top salaries.
Apart from McDavid, Eichel and Draisaitl, no young players over 8mln/year.

McDavid gets the extra million / million and half for playing in Edm; similar for Draisaitl.
Buffalo gives an additional 1million to Eichel for having to play in windowless Buffalo.

Matthews, Marner, Nylander can guarantee their life earnings signing an 8y deal now. Those numbers are very fair. After those deals, still can make some additional 3-5 years of good money.

I don't think Matthews will get a total contract worth more than Tavares.

Nylander probably signs below 7million, even if more than 5years.

Buffalo and Edmonton (frank)ed the rest of the league. It used to be that you’d get a good raise from your ELC, and still be cap friendly until your UFA years, and then make bank.


Then Chia and GM Grumpy cat came along and just went “herp derp max contract”... and now all the young stars are going to expect the same kind of treatment.

Hopefully Dubas plays a bit of hard ball and goes back to the previous way of doing business. These guys are RFAs, after all. They don’t have too many options.

The Tavares deal should set a ceiling on Matthews... if the Leafs sign him this offseason, they might even convince him to come in under 10, and Nylander should be good with a 6.5M contract- that’s about 110,000/ point- and the going rate for a while has been 100k per. The biggest question mark, IMO, is Marner. His agent isn’t afraid to pull the sit-out card. I think Nylander and Matthews need to get done first to set the floor and ceiling for his contract, and get him somewhere in the middle.

Thornton is pretty good defensively...plus he can slot in on the PP. No issue with Joe for a year - if he was relatively cheap. Those 4 centers would be a challenge for any team.
