Would be smart to lock up Provorov and Konecny before trying to figure out if Simmonds should be signed or traded |

And that's the key. If he has recurring health issues and plays only 65-70 games and puts up just 20-22 goals and 40 or so points, it's pretty doubtful that any GM will be ponying up 5 year, 35 million dollar offers.
OTOH, if he has a normal Wayne Simmonds season: 82 games 30-32 goals and 50-60 points? Then yeah, once you factor in the intangibles he brings to a team, some GM is going to throw out 5 years and 35 million without a doubt.
It really is a tough call and will probably be the hardest decision Hextall is going to have to make as GM, at least in the near future. - BiggE
Hextall hasn't changed his tone on Simmonds at all. Said he intends to re-sign him and asked if JVR signing changes things on Wayne he directly stated it does not.
I mean he could just be blowing smoke but it seems rare that he says somethign he doesn't mean. |

Yup - same thought crossed my mind. Imho, it does put the writing on the wall for Simmonds, and that saddens me. - Scoob
Here is my feeling. There seem to be a couple teams desperate for scoring, Bruins and Sharks to name a few. I feel like there is definitely a market for Simmonds right now. If a team misses on Skinner, like EK says Boston and San Jose are, Simmonds would seem like a really nice piece to go after.

Yup, agree 100%. I'd try to get both of them locked up this summer.
I'd go max with Provorov. I'd offer 8 years, 65 million, aav 8.125 million. It's a small gamble, but if he ends up being the player that I expect him to be, it will be a steal by year 2 and by year 4 or 5, when top #1 Dmen are getting new deals with aav's of 12 million or so, it will probably be one of the best values in the league.
For TK, I'd try to lock him up for another 4 seasons. If he goes out this year and puts up 25 goals and 50 points or more, the cost is going to go up. Right now a 4 year extension like this could probably get a deal done:
19-20 2.5 million
20-21 3.0 million
21-22 3.75 million
22-23 4.75 million
Total $14 million, 3.5 million aav. Would be another great value deal

Knowing some Spanish helps (I don't, but both my daughters are conversant), and mixing in some Catalan scores you bonus points, but there are enough English speakers there to make it not intimidating. |

If Hextall had zero interest in bringing back Manning and Filppula next season, I would have preferred that he direct the coaching staff to not lean on them so much all the way up to the final whistle of game 6. - Feanor
GM's don't tend to tell coaches how to coach.

I went after graduating university before I started my job. It was only 2 days and I imagine my experience was much different from yours haha.
I went with a buddy who grew up in Canada (french). He handled Paris well and I, having taken Spanish classes in high school, said I would help him in Spain....we got there and I was like uhhhhh sorry man I have no idea wtf they are saying |

Sorry to hear a 3rd year was the deal breaker with RIley Nash. Would have really like to see him in the orange and black, and 3 years isn't that bad... - WhirlingDervish
I don't think the 3rd year should've been a big deal. Can always trade a player.

GMs talk to their coaches all the time about the lineups and the roster. The coach picks the lineup, but he can take on advice from the GM.
Smart organizations don't overplay crappy veterans who already have a foot out of the door, when they have younger, better players available. Just look at CBJ healthy scratching JJ in the playoffs. That should have been how Manning's Flyers career ended. - Feanor
Every situation is different. Can't compare what happens with one team to another. The fact was that Manning was better. Can't confuse talent and upside with current level of play.

lol! Yeah, as soon as they get the idea that you understand Spanish they go off - my daughters held their own most of the time but occasionally did have to ask some folks to slow it down |

8 years for both! (though I'd imagine Konecny goes for a shorter deal).
I don't think Provorov is going to be that expensive. It is one where I am not worried about it if it is that expensive, but I really think it can and should be below 8 million AAV based on other contracts

If I'm in TK's camp, if that's the offer, I am waiting until next offseason to make the deal. I am going off the assumption that TK will around a 50 - 60 point producer for the forseeable future (provided PP2 gets going a bit). He's already worth more than 3.5 AAV.

That’s why it’s a negotiation. But, I’d have no prob upping the deal I offered by a million per if that gets the deal done. |

I think it's fair for him to bet on himself, but 50-60 points without PP1 time is really good. I definitely want something similar to Ghost in term. 6-8 years would be huge. Use the RFA years to keep the AAV low. Once they begin contending they will have a window before contracts start pushing them over the cap. Having Konecny locked up longer makes that window longer IMO.
For example 4 years means right as they are a top contender they have to find a way to sign Konecny in his prime at UFA rates. Have to do everything they can to avoid that |

True. And for the record, I am horrible at estimating contracts and trades. Not really my cup of tea, so I might be off-base too.

I guess you have to look at it and say, can he provide 40-45 ES points and 5 - 10PP points on a consistent basis? Last year, he produced 44 ES points. One has to imagine 2nd PP will be better this year and following year. Maybe the range is closer to 45 - 55 points?
Again, contracts are not my thing, but I believe he's better than a 3.5AAV player, currently. |

TK has improved greatly but still is a bit of a wild hair. Give him a fair contract for 3 years which will keep him as a RFA when it's up. If he grows into the player we hope he can be in the next couple of years, then you go from there.
He racked up the majority of his points last year playing alongside G and Coots, which probably will increase provided he takes his D game a little more seriously and remains on the first line. That will be the key for Travis. If he's demoted (as he was at the end of last season in order to balance the lines, as per Hakstol), his numbers will more than likely be negatively affected.
Provo is in a whole different place altogether. Lock him up now. No question.
