Plays top opposition and plays among the most even strength minutes on his team each of the past three years. Maybe he isn't ideally a top pairing guy, but he's proven to be plenty effective in the role and has played it for three years. To me, that defines him as a top pairing.
I refuse to accept anyone that calls him a "marginal top-4 D" or "just a 2nd pairing shutdown guy". At absolute worst he's an excellent anchor for a tough minute second pairing. That player is as valuable to a winning team as a top pairing Dman. |

And yet...
He's a part of the sum that was the Oilers. 2nd pairing guy, yes. His big minutes I think were reflective of a lack other options... |

And the team's total results are his fault despite posting 50% GF despite facing the best players the other team had to throw at them and playing with the burden of his father's death in the latter half of the year? He and Klef were partnered together and got summarily caved to the tune of around 39% GF. Once separated, Klef continued to struggle against secondary comp (~47% GF) while Larsson bounced back hard against his usual comp (~57% GF).
Last season's poor results were because of three things: 1.) horrid special teams that, when corrected even just to league average, accounted for a difference of 29 goals in the oppositions favour, 2.) inane coaching decisions that shifted their defensive strategy from a net protection system to a man-on-man zone coverage (before adjusting in February) 3.) Draisaitl being unable to carry the scrubs he was anchored with most often to pull even.
Is Sean Monahan not a top line forward because Mikael Backlund's line got caved hard enough to invalidate the top line's positive influence? |

Boqvist coming to the Knights. Bouchard is likely gonna have to a lesser burden this season back in junior and might see a decline in overall production as a result. Nothing wrong with that, though. Playing with better players should help mitigate the decrease in production he'll see as a result of not playing quite as many minutes a night. |

The only other Seattle team I can think of that didn't have both blue and green was the Supersonics, which were ugly (frank)ing jerseys in their own right. |

I disagree. Maybe not the greatest wrestler, but he can go. He's put on some really good matches with Punk and AJ especially. Maybe they "carried" him, but it takes two to tango.

Yeah. Chiarelli said in April that the thing he was going to address this offseason was the blue line. I think it is safe to say that ship has sailed unless he some how becomes a half decent GM and gets Karlsson which is really only possible if he can get some other sucker (looking at Vancouver being the only team with worse management) to take Russell, Lucic and Sekeras.
I don't agree with the blog though. I think Nuge and Draisaitl are playing wing because there are 3 talented players on the team and all are centers. Not a lack of wingers, I mean they do have that but it is more that Nuge or Draisaitl is wasted on line 3. Both are great centers and can play a two way game. I also think Rattie did good but Yammamoto is most likely going to be the best RW (actually the best natural winger) in training camp and the preseason. The kid has incredible skill. I think the Oilers organization has also made it clear they expect him to play this year.
However that is the big thing. All their forwards have huge question marks over them with the exception of Nuge, Draisaitl, McDavid, Brodziak and Kharia. You know what you are getting with these guys. Brodziak will most likely outshine Strome and Kharia will fit 3rd or 4th line with the skill for that role and not much else. Pulj, Kassian Caggiula, Strome, Yammamoto, Benson and Rieder have all played great games and have shown signs of being able to play larger roles but all could be 3/4th line caliber at times as well. Rattie is the other way around. We are hopeful he can surprise us again but that is a question mark.
Oh and they should have grabbed a better backup goalie on a one to two year deal and bought out montoya. |
