I think one key thing is it's nice to have money going into free agency. But so many top free agents are being locked up prior to reaching the market. What are we saving our money for? just a thought. If Johnson can make his 5 million per year worth it, I wouldn't mind having him for 6 years. - TPC
He's going to be 28 years old this month, so this is the age old argument about what type of player he will be on the back three years of that contract. Plenty of guys have been effective into their early to mid 30s, but many have not. But, honestly, in a three years, a $5 million cap hit may not look that bad given the constant rise of the cap, assuming that the league doesn't get locked out again and the cap drops.
Johnson is a solid 50 point type of player, and he shoots right handed. Again, I like the player but not sure if he's a good fit. He primarily plays center, right?

I don't think that's a bad deal, he'll be 28 at the end of July. There is that NTC to consider. Why would he waive it to come to NYC? |

Yea I believe he plays center...maybe if we could move him to wing? I mean i doubt it happens but i wouldn't hate depending on the price |

2020 first, Killorn, Cirelli and Cally for Zucc.
Zucc and Karlsson would put them over the top - Slimtj100

Solid points in the first paragraph.
But perfect comment in the second.
Is he part of the long term plan, does he fit the system they are developing up front with their forwards? |

He isn't a game changer. Would rather save the space and see what happens next year. |

Although we have the cap room now, that contract is too long if we get competitive and he goes downhill.
What if that's the contract we have to take to get someone like Gourde? Would you do it? |

Gourde is kind of an interesting situation. He was essentially a 26 year old rookie last year. Is he a late bloomer or was that a one year anomaly aided by a very good team?
But in response to your question I will say this, not sure if it would be good for them long term, but if you put Johnson and Gourde on the roster next year, the team might not suck as much as we thought they would.

Probably. Doubt Tampa would do that though.
But thats exactly it. Whats to say he doesn't crap the bed by the time the Rangers are ready to compete again. Don't like the length of that contract. |

50 pts for 5 million a year

Another problem is Johnson is a center with a NTC and a really long contract. Not saying he's the guy I want, or Gourde for that matter, throwing out semi-realistic offers Tampa might put out there to free up cap space. Rangers would be instantly better though. |

Yeah, I am wondering whether it would be more like a Callahan, a good prospect (Foote or Radyish), and the conversion of the conditional pick next year into a guaranteed first for .... I don't know, something.

I would take that deal because I like radishes.
Cally makes the most sense in a salary dump. Throw in a solid prospect and a pick and I'm sold. |

Scallions are so one-dimensional. You can do more with radishes, ever had them pickled? |
