I’ve told this story before but, my first jersey was Barry beck and I wanted routsalianen but back then they charged per letter for the sewn on jerseys...so I threw a fit wanting him and my dad was like “your getting beck god damn it, wether you like it or not!” - Slimtj100
I wanted a blue Leetch Jersey, but wasn't making much dough at the time, so I ended up with an un-lettered white jersey because it was 1/2 price. Think I paid $40. |

"Shoot the puck, Barry, Shoot the puck!"
Those were the unforgettable words of then, Rangers tv color commentator, Bill Chadwick, known as "The Big Whistle", due to his earlier great days as a top NHL ref.
Beck had a powerful d'man's slap shot that would be equivalent to the best ones' of today, but was "afraid" to use it enough for some reason. Maybe he did fear it could injure his teammates if it struck them directly by accident. I don't know, but it use to frustrate greatly Chadwick and then former tv announcer, Jim Gordon to both think that back then. I witnessed his hard slap shots as close as you can get at some of their practices at their former, Rye, Playland practice facility back then.
But why tj, couldn't you ask Jimbo to lend you some cash to have those extra 2 color, drop shadow, tackle twill (poly twill) letters sewn on your jersey, so you could get Ruotsalainen's extra 8 letters on it? Yes, I know, that it would have been at least about another $40 or so back then. |

Beck was never the same after that Pat Flatley hit in the 84 playoffs. He was already on the decline but that took him out for good basically, he hung on for another 2 years but played sparingly & wasn't effective at all.

I'm surprised that tj didn't opt for that one in MIO, since the price wouldn't matter that much, as opposed to having BECK sewn on his jersey. |

Oh man! So jealous!
Funny, Now that I can afford one, still don't have any player jersey. Came real close to getting the 2010 Callahan USA Olympic sweater. Wish I did.
My wife got me the Zucc T-shirt for Christmas a few years ago, that's as close as I got. |

I remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever when they went to the slanted, or arced, names on the backs like Detroit. It was circa 92-93 I beleive |

I recall that damaging hit very well made by Flatley on Beck back then, which ended up reducing him in stature from the player they thought he would be, after having dealt to acquire him, 5 players to the then, former Colorado Rockies, about 1 month into the 1979/80 season.
After coming off their Finals loss to Montreal in 1979, they felt that Beck could be the answer to winning a Cup, and to acquire him, parted with top promising young d'man, Mike McEwen, along with promising forward then in Lucien DeBlois, as well as fan favorite in winger, Pat Hickey, and two other either, I believe, very young players or prospects. |

Yea, just before my time of becoming a fan but know the history well. Beck first wore #3, then switched to 5 a few years later * James Patrick took 3. |

I remember when Colin Campbell was coaching here, when a big "SPEEELING" error was made by current, longtime equipment manager, in Acacio Marques's staff on a player's jersey.
Someone in Cass's staff had misspelled Wayne Gretzky's name before having it sewn on his jersey. I believe it was misspelled as GRETKZY in error, during possibly a road loss to the Islanders.
But I do remember it back then, being the headline and photo on the back page of the "New York Daily News", in those days of Colin Campbell coaching.
I believe their headline under Campbell's coaching had stated:
"Gretzky's Jersey Not The Only Thing Wrong For The Rangers". |

I read a few days ago he flew to Sweden to talk to Hank. He might not be back yet - TPC
Wasn’t there a coach in Sweden they were interested in hiring? |

And James Patrick was another player that many "UNTRUE BLUE" Rangers fans had mistreated wrongly in those days, especially through another repeatedly stupid chant at MSG many times while he was on the ice. It seemed like those fans expected every top d'man they had to be no less than a Brad Park of his Rangers' days through the mid 1970's, if not even a Bobby Orr. Then along in the middle of Patrick's Rangers tenure came along Leetch, their new Brad Park and more. |

Jimbo & Oldschool have talked about this how the Ranger fans always seem to need to have a Defensive whipping boy. Whether it be Beck, Patrick, Joe Cirella, Bruce Driver, Poti, Rozy, the list goes on. |

Poti was hammered relentlessly if I remember right. Cirella and Driver you could understand being former Devils

You’d think they have to. Bunch of 3rd liners and no true 4th liners besides maybe Fast. Any idea y they wouldn’t sign Maroon? Rumor is 1 year deal with St Louis, put him on a line with Chytil. |

They are doing the smart thing tho, it’s just hard to accept it because they were competitive for so long. I’d like to see what the 2 tier of prospects can do like Ronning, Meskanen (sp?) etc instead of signing some older vet. Unless it’s a one yr deal and they can flip him at the TDL. |
