I was just thinking Hagg is worth much more that 875K (his QO). I would say if they are willing to do 4-5 years he should take $1.25M per with a nice signing bonus. Like it or not, he needs to be is a top 4 defenseman. |

What difference does it make what colour his skin is? It’s a tragedy no matter what. - HonkyTonkMan
It was meant to be put out there as hockey is still very much a "white" sport. Unless you excel, tbh the odds of making it to the NHL are slim. Opportunities for POC are few and far between. Sad but true. |

Thanks for pointing this out. I don't think anyone knew there are more white hockey players than black. |

So are you saying that NHL teams would rather draft a bad "white" player as opposed to a good "non-white" player?
When it gets to the point where hockey can become a career, I think skin color gets thrown out the window by the GMs at the junior ranks and above. If it's a 50-50 shot between two players, sure, I'll buy that prejudice can come into play. But even the the junior levels, it's more about winning than about race. |

I mean, it's obvious that the majority of players from juniors to the NHL are white. It's apparent that it's a white-dominated sport statistically. But Ray Emery's passing has nothing to do with his race and everything to do with former NHL player and a flawed yet generous person passing. |

This. I meant my comment as it's sad one of the few people of colour in the sport has passed. He was, and will continue to be, an influence to other POC that hockey isn't always for white kids. |

He doesn't need to be a top 4 defenseman. Every team needs some solid physical 3rd pair defenseman. If that's what Hagg ultimately turns out to be, nothing wrong with that. |

I also figured since I started, I may as well put out my Philadelphia Flyers all time heart and soul team.
GOALIES
Ron Hextall
Ray Emery
-both of these guys were all about winning, not personal stats, and both were fiery and gave every ounce of themselves to the game.
DEFENSE
Barry Ashbee
Jimmy Watson
Brad Marsh
Eric Desjardins
Derian Hatcher
Kimmo Timonen
-everyone of these Dmen played through pain and injury that would have caused a lesser man to sit out. All were team first guys that cared about winning much more than about themselves. They led by example and were guys that younger players looked up to.
CENTERS
Bobby Clarke
Dave Poulin
Rod Brind'amour
Danny Briere
-Perhaps no player in the NHL worked harder or cared more about winning than Bobby Clarke. Poulin often played through injuries which would have had most mortals in a hospital bed and was a class act on and off the ice. Brindy was a meat and potatoes guy who worked his tail off and never missed a game and rarely missed a shift and Briere was a guy who played much bigger than his size and always came up huge in the biggest games of the season.
LEFT WING
Ross Lonsberry
Bob Kelly
Shjon Podein
Claude Giroux
-Lonsberry, by all of his teammates accounts, was the consummate professional and a pleasure to play with. Roscoe would do anything to help his team win and was as selfless as they come. Kelly was a one man wrecking crew on the ice and he lived for standing up for his teammates and helping his team win. Also in the latter part of his career he was a great mentor to young players. Podein was a throwback to the lunchpail crew that were the Broad Street Bullies. No player in the Lindros era worked harder than Podein. Giroux, like Briere, is a little guy that plays much bigger than his size. He'll do anything to help his team win and he often plays through pain and injury.
RIGHT WING
Gary Dornhoefer
Paul Holmgren
Sami Kapanen
Wayne Simmonds
Dorny gave every ounce of himself on the ice and has the scars and the surgical procedures to prove it. Holmgren was a guy that always had his teammates backs and he cared only about winning games, never about himself. Kapanen was a tiny guy who played like he was 6'2 200 and worked as hard as any Flyer ever. He did the little things that help a team win and never cared about personal stats. Simmonds is the heart and soul of today's team and is another guy who always puts the team first and always stands up for his mates. - BiggE
He was only here for one season and wasn't a very good person, but Jason Smith played the end of the season and 3 playoff rounds with 2 separated shoulders. |

Exactly. If you have the skills to play at the NHL level, GMs will find you.
They find white people to play in the NBA. |

The news really bothered me. He fought through so much to get his career back after his physical issues. All that pain and work, and then it ends like that.....

On the Flyers current roster, he is a top 4. he might get PLAYED on the bottom pairing, but that will just be another mistake on the handling of personnel.
Just read another column on how if the Flyers managed to get Erik Karlsson, even if it meant trading one of their young Ds to get him, it would change the entire dynamic in the Eastern conference.
Ghost + TK for Karlsson. Its what the Lightning, Pens and Caps fear most. |

Maybe that's what's being offered and why he hasn't signed yet. The kid has a huge upside, but he was really misused last season. He should never be paired with AMac, and anyone playing with Ghost is going to be made to look bad sometimes, especially a green rookie. He even makes Provy look bad 5v5.
