$5M seems expensive for his average production IMO.

Now, if he plays closer to his 2nd half lasts season it will be of terrific value to the Sabres ... and Sam explodes on his next contract.

If he has inconsistencies in his game caused by dem0ns he was facing, well then it becomes an undesirable contract.

I would have preferred a show me of 2 years at say 4.00 - 4.25 per...then lock him up for longer term isf desired. (yes at an overall higher rate)

I think I know where you are coming from with respect to holding teams accountable for their stupidity in making long-term commitments...and I don't disagree with you

But when player performance is different because they are no longer motivated by the fact the contract is guaranteed...then something needs to be done there.
