So if Nylander gets 8 and Gardiner gets 7, what happens then?
Everybody loves saying I'm underestimating what these guys will be making but if all your overestimates come through, the Leafs are still (frank)ed but with less impactful players. - Unholy_Goalie
Nylander should be in the $7-7.5 range. If Gards wants $7 I show him the door. The point is to be patient and let the kids develop together. We have plenty of young D talent coming up the ranks. Take a breath. |

Why is Nylander getting 8? - Steven_Seagull
Because he's super wicked amazing awesome and better than Karlsson and going to kill it this year.
Oh wait, we have to fit your narrative so he'll only get 6 if he stays. But if he gets traded then Matthews, Marner and Karlsson will all make 12 million each because the narrative will be they can't fit under the cap. But if Nylander and Gardiner stay, then they'll take 6 each and the narrative will work perfectly. |

If Nylanders agent asks for that I hope Dubas smacks him in the face with a rolled up copy of Pastrnaks contract then turns and points it at Marners agent. |

No, it would be a depth player like Brown because Kadri still fits under the cap. And after Marleau retires, a portion of that money can go to Kadri. - Unholy_Goalie
What about money that needs to go to Kapanen, Johnson, Rielly, Dermott, Hyman, etc.? Or are they just easily replaceable as well? |

Nah, Marner gets 8, Nylander wants 8. Matthews gets 12. Gardiner wants 8 and because you said he's as good as Karlsson he stays for the bargain of 8.
It's fun to just overestimate and pretend none of them will fit. |

If any of you female genitalias are planning to stay in Stratford, I highly recommend the Forest Motel. Shockingly awesome and affordable. |

Nylander is an RFA right now, and has comparable numbers to other 6-6.8 players. So he’ll make 8?
You are so bad at this. |

Write this down so you don't have to refer back to this post when it happens:
Nylander will get between $7-7.5. |

Anything is possible, I won't argue that.. It just seems more likely that the big 3 will cost more in terms of salary then what you project..
I won't argue how good Erik Karlsson is, I flippin' love Erik Karlsson, but we can't afford him long term.. |

Dermott has time left on his ELC, Kapanen and Johnsson got raises to 2.5 million to match what Brown and Hyman are getting as 15-20 goal scorers. It was all accounted for if you cared to actually read the details.
And if they can't fit, yes, they can be moved and are replaceable. That's what the system is for and that's why they play with the high paid players who you can't easily acquire or replace. |

Marner can get north of 8 if he puts up ppg numbers.
If it wasn't for the luck of timing, Nylander might get more than $7.5 if he has a monster year.
Matthews will get JT money.
Gardiner might want $8, but I never argued we should give him that. Nor did I ever say he was as good as Karlsson, just more economical based on what I think he would cost. |

Karlsson would be wicked awesome here. The guy is extremely talented and a top 5 D-man in the league.. The cost to get him, plus what we'd potentially have to lose to keep him here long term, is legit scary
Say the cost is Nylander, Liljegren, a 2019 1st and Sparks to get him. Once he agrees to an extension, we'd likely have to move out, as you said, Brown, or Hyman or Johnsson.. That's potentially losing as many as 7 pieces to bring in one.. and replacing the rest with spare parts.. Could it work, yes... Will it help up long-term, not sure.. |

It's debatable what they would cost, especially if they were all on the same page on what needs to happen in the short term for them to get better players and ice a better team. But, again, there are things that can be done fairly easily to open up the required cap space. Yzerman isn't stupid and even he's trying to make it fit for a reason and the Leafs can fit Karlsson easier than Tampa Bay can. |

Look at what Chicago had/has to do because of the Kane/Toews contracts. They haven’t won a single playoff series since those contracts started, yet they have to sell off players. But the Leafs will be fine with 3 of them? |
