The only playoff scenario this team is looking at is a Flames/Leafs-esque bad team on a crazy hot year that crashes and burns the next year kind of thing.

A massive influx of talent on D is going to be necessary before this team takes any meaningful step forward.

Hughes and OJ are great pieces, but they're going to need 2-3 years at minimum before they're the kind of guys that can carry a defence assuming both pan out to max potential.

And that's only one side of a defence.

Its kind of remarkable that for all the "talent" the team has stocked into the system after being the worst team on average since 2016, everything literally hinges on Hughes (drafted 2018) becoming a legit first pair defenceman, and EP (drafted 2017) learning to be a #1 center despite having like 9 games experience at the position in the last year and a half.

If you offered me 2:1 odds that the Canucks don't make the playoffs on EP's ELC I would go out and grab a second mortgage on my place.

Not like we traded guys in their primes (Kesler, Garrison, Bieksa, Hamhuis, Burrows, Hansen etc), but goes to show how shallow the roster was behind the Sedins.

The sad part is that even all those "old" guys with NTC's still pulled a solid mix of returns.

A first, couple of seconds, former first, one or two former seconds, a later pick or two and a decent roster player or 2.

Real good returns. But then those returns got turned into Gudbranson, Sutter, and Vey and then spent the money on a bunch of contracts people knew were bad and turned out to be bad oh wow.

First I've ever heard people talk about c and d prospects but whatever floats your boat .

Pretty sure his family don’t need the $65k he would make playing in the AHL. It’s not about guaranteeing a spot on the roster, it’s about seeing a realistic chance of playing there with so many guys locked up already.

I read somewhere yesterday that TL's recommendation to Hughes was that he return to the NCAA for another year. Based on JB's comments it seems he was on board with that as well as he told Hughes he couldn't guarantee him a roster spot.

Hughes going back has nothing to do with the TL firing, he was going back no matter what.
