Might as well be a "glass half full" guy when it comes to the NYR. Plenty of real stuff in our lives to be pessimistic about...no? |

I betcha if we actuallly researched every GMs moves, we would all be shocked by some of their blunders as well - rrentz
Definitely. Ottawa's recent moves come to mind, even Uncle Lou has made some questionable decisions. |

I was just thirsty.
That's what sports are supposed to be, a distraction from real life. What happens at the Garden has no direct impact on what happens in my daily life. Might be bummed about a game (or season), or a trade, ultimately life goes on. |

I have mixed feelings as well. If he was signed long term, he could still be traded mid contract, but like I said, we have no idea what went down in negotiations, and as far as we know, Hayes might have insisted on NMC for him to sign a multi year deal. His agent isn't stupid, and can sense that Hayes would probably be odd man out in a year or two, and didn't want to sign a multi-year deal and then be traded. This way Hayes has 31 teams to chosse from as an UFA....even if he is traded at deadline. Makes sense on Hayes front
Everyone is assuming that NYR , and not Hyaes is the reason long term deal didn't get done. - rrentz

I throw the question out to you guys, but other than Lundqvist, which we all figured a long term deal was going to be a no-bracket, who else signed a one year deal and then a long term extension when eligible? - airjan23
Makes no difference if anybody did it I think gorton is hoping Hayes has a good year and if the kids play well he goes at the deadline if he has a monster year then he stays and gets paid. I think the ntc had a lot to do with this. I think he has a good year and is locked up next year. |

Rangers gonna build a Dynasty after this year when they end up trading; Hayes for a 1st. Zucc for a 2nd and a prospect. Plus, Spooner for a 2nd.

Yeah, I agree with that as well.
I don't like the deal, but it takes two to tango and if the Hayes camp was asking for things in terms of salary, term and no movement clauses that the Rangers were uncomfortable doing, then maybe they just made the call that they were better off not extending Hayes long-term. I do know this: eventually the Rangers are going to spend all the money they have available to be competitive, and maybe they would prefer to spend that money next summer on someone with bigger game breaking potential then to be locked into Hayes at $6 million per long term (just an example of what he may have been asking for).
Again, it's not ideal, but they may have viewed the long-term option as worse given Hayes' demands.

It could also be that Gorton (frank)ed up and Hayes demands were reasonable. |

I’m not sure NYR had a choice. Hayes would either have taken them to arbitration, where he could have received even more in an award on a 1 year deal and still walk next year, or they sign him to whatever his demands were which was likely 6.5m for 5+ years which is a huge risk |

If Hayes performs well, he could bring back a hell of a return at the deadline |

the final chapter of the Kevin Hayes NYR book has yet to be written
so we should hold off on totally analyzing the book just yet |

Sure, or he could get hurt and the Rangers could get nothing.
And how much more can you expect than a late first round pick and maybe a decent prospect? I would much prefer an NHL ready player for Hayes. |

That is true, but nonetheless, I am going to start looking into who I want from Montreal.

no matter what, I really doubt they would let him get to UFA status, we aren't the Icelanders |
