I throw the question out to you guys, but other than Lundqvist, which we all figured a long term deal was going to be a no-bracket, who else signed a one year deal and then a long term extension when eligible? - airjan23
That's why Gorton & Co. blew their handling of the Hayes situation this off season. If they knew that talks were far apart from back then, they should have dealt him while his price was at its highest throughout June, leading up to and during the draft, & to the start of free agency. I can't "raise my hands" to claim that I foresaw Spooner receiving a two year deal at a $4M per AAV, prior to Hayes, (a former Chicago 1st Round, #24 overall pick), being first re-signed to a long term deal instead.
Their only recourse now is moving Hayes in some deal for another team's quality free agent to likely depart next summer. Or, if Hayes should perform equally or above his play of last season, his trade return value prior to the 2019 deadline could still net something of a little lower return magnitude late in his walk year. But that could also make the Rangers look bad for not meeting his long term demands if they were found out later to be reasonable in nature. However, should his play falter in contrast, so will his trade value even more.
The Islanders took the same risk last year with d'man, Calvin de Haan, only to lose him for nothing to the Hurricanes. They just also took that same chance with center, Brock Nelson. Those two, as also Hayes, are far from the chance that one of the elite as in Hank had a great chance of later being extended long term. |

Rangers can extend him after January 1st, or trade him before the deadline. Gives both sides more time and avoids arbitration. Sky isn’t falling. - smellmyfinger
He becomes a UFA, so arbitration isn't an option. Sky isn't falling, but if they let him walk after the season, it wouldn't look good. Trade him for a 1st, let Howden crack the lineup, Win/Win at this point. Rangers don't appear to be a contender, so flip him for what you can get while he is playing well. My guess is he goes to Boston, born, raised, and played NCAA there. |
