Ideally Edler to TBL or NYI would fetch us some nice goodies. Lots of prospects to fetch out of. Helps the LHD logjam but weakens us as well which nobody would mind. - Nighthawk
This very likely isn’t gonna happen. It’s more likely that Edler is given a contract extension before the TDL. |

Smart money says yes to that.
Swedes luv Vancouver & if longterm careers here then they tend to get rooted deeply. |

Which is frustrating since Edler turns 33 next April and will be even older by the time this team makes the playoffs again. |

Agree
So say he is 3rd pairing of the 3LHD cuz Hughes & OJ are better? Thats a nice dream. The RHD will hold us back now & later on. A big sore spot unless Hughes really could swap.
Hughes/Tanev
OJ/EG
Edler/Stecher
Edler/Hughes
OJ/Tanev
Hutton/EG/Stecher
Last pairings makes a trade likely. 1 domino falls on D would clear up the future a lot. |

he's the 22nd oldest defenceman in the league. only players older are guys who had higher peaks than him like Chara/Keith etc, or bad long term deals that teams are stuck with.
I like Edler and an extension is fine because he's good cannon fodder, but it can't be long.
Defenceman don't make it as far past 30 as they used to. |

i felt it was kind of implied as part of a series of posts but all good. more about adding to/evolving the discussion than calling you out.
also i don't not like you. your posts just have a knack for catching my attention. usually because we're on opposite ends of the spectrum though |

it was just about how much this current regime sucks eggs at finding players of value at the pro level. all the players they got good returns for were leftovers from before. its a pretty easy argument to make that they haven't brought in a + value player as UFA or near UFA in terms of dollars or acquisition cost. |

Yeah that's fair.
For what it's worth, I think the regime is more interested in finding guys they think will play rather than worrying about what they can flip them for (not saying they shouldn't be doing that more however).
UFA's they've brought in have done a job of sorts on the whole (Miller, Dorsett, Vrbata x 1 year) but we're definitely not getting + value like you said.
Some may see that as hurting our lottery chances/slowing down the rebuild, while others may see it as maintaining a semblance of a reasonable work environment for the kids. Perhaps its a bit of both. |

Wait until Sutter is 33 and going to sign another long term contract - A_SteamingLombardi
Beagle is the 40th oldest active forward in the league and he's 32. I can't remember exactly but basing it off the players older than him and expected retirements, he'll probably be the 25th-ish oldest player in the league by game 1 of year 2 on that contract.
He's a 4th liner so he doesn't exactly have a high peak to fall from. |

A 3 year deal for Edler would be win TBH. He is still a top 4 guys and by the end of it will slip into a bottom pairing guy and then retire. Would also prevent us from getting an expensive LHD. OJ will likely be ready for 3rd pairing before the end of the season, and HUghes will likely be ready for top 4 by the 2019-2020 season |

I am along the same line . You need a few vets to make sure these young guys don't get fed to the wolves.
Soon as EP is ready to take over top center then move Sutter
When Gaudette is ready to play third line center then move Beagle down to 4 th line and then move him in the last year.
I don't mind Edler Hughes OJ next year 2020 |

Gudbranson has been nothing short of awful. A recent bust, a 2nd and a 4th for a dude who can't skate, pivot or puckhandle and has played 50% of his games. The only partner he looks good with is Edler, and there's a reason for that because Edler makes all his partners hella better.
He has one strong game about every 10 or so and everyone jumps around like "wow he's so great" and then he picks his nose and stumbles over his clownshoes the next 3 weeks.
But hey, he has a nice beard and he got in a fight once. Oh and he talks about how tough he is. Doesn't matter he won't walk his own walk, he talks the talk. - Lindenis#1

I hearya & we don’t have that type of complimentary player. Still doesn’t make EG anything special. Its all on him to break out & prove it. If not he’s fair game for eternity. - Nighthawk
Hughes is Brian Campbell without the shot... so yes, we do have that type of player, just not until next season |

Agree other i see Hughes insulated with Tanev meaning 1st pair & PP time. Tanev will do PK time. |
