He's was 8th among Flames Forwards in ice time last season and managed only 6 goals, 22 points.

Can't imagine that improves in a 4th line role. What good is there in paying for a 33 year old in a downward spiral to lace up for 9 minutes per night? Just throw a kid in there instead. At least the kid might surprise you.

Do we have any kids who can throw a body check in the pipeline?

I’d bet the lines that start game 1 of the season don’t finish the 2nd period before Q’s line blender is on LOL

Nah, it's more Skinner's edge work. Guy can change directions faster than damn near anyone I've seen. Somehow he manages to pick up speed when making cuts on guys. He's also shockingly strong on his feet for being a smaller guy.

I am sure the figure skating help build the hockey lite edges...back to the "Hawk draft failure before ever playing a game in North America, Adam Boqvist"...

He is very light on his feet and one of the finest edge work skaters in the class...

As a 4th line guy or 13th forward, Brouwer is just fine on a cheap contract. He is defensively responsible and can play a physical game. If a young guy outplays him and takes his place, Brouwer sits in the press box. Not a big deal. I don't really care if he produces points if he kills penalties with Kruger and allows the skill guys some rest in those situations.

Edit: Brouwer also started 60% of his shifts in the defensive zone and spent 2:04 per game on the PK in Calgary.

Skeptical about this 3 Cups?

No skeptical about his ability to coach a team that is not loaded with all world talent in their prime.

If the 'Hawks bring Brouwer back, will he still elbow Corey Crawford in the head on skate-boys?

Is that REALLY WHAT all three Cups were?

unstoppable juggernauts that were destined?

I honestly felt the first Cup was coming that year because they played a new style that was when other teams didn't understand what to defend where.

A lot of games in each of the 3 cup wins were decided by players, not all worlders...

And within your comment is the foundation for my skepticism that you originally questioned. I give Q a lot of credit for the Cups because the system he implemented was unusual. But, after mimicking him, the rest of the NHL has seemingly caught up or even surpassed us by refining it. My skepticism is about the coaching staff's ability and willingness (more importantly) to really change their "system" based on the direction of the league and the skill that they have on the roster today.

They say the right words, but in the same breath, they'll make a statement about "respecting what has always worked" or similar. As someone who makes a living trying to get organizations to accept major changes, that's a red flag for me.

I'm hoping they do show some creativity and that it results in more success than last year. But, until I see it, I'll remain skeptical.

Are we talking pirouettes here?
Skated w/a guy that did them all the time. Finally caught up to him when he was doing one of his pirouettes playing w/the puck in our zone and blew out his knee after getting caught in a rut. Karma.

Called eagles for those of you that have also have experience rolling skating (the traditional ones with 4 wheels on each skate, not rollerblades). Really not the best thing to be doing on ice skates.

- savvyone-1

I guess you missed the toe loop and triple axel combination he did last season before he kicked the puck to his stick and scored glove side. Kidding aside, it was more fundamental stuff, nothing that was looking for a high score from the judges.

And Calgary missed the playoffs.

If you have a guy who's not capable of scoring 10 goals with 3rd line minutes, that guy shouldn't be on the team at all.

Brouwer in a second for the right price, but remember they knew before they traded Brouwer to the Capitals for the Danault first round pick that he wanted more than they wanted to pay long term due to the core dollars being set.

You think Brouwer wants to play for peanuts?

That would be the issue.

- wiz1901

If he would get bought out by the flames I would be ok bringing him on 1 year contract for 1 to 2million. He fills a need the hawks are lacking size and physicality, 3rd 4th line RW go to the net. Plus it would sikrua edjsell more time in Rockford to develop and be ready for the next season. Lets not rush these kids let them develop and gain confidence so when they do come up they contribute right away.

Troy Brouwer waivered to be bought out by Calgary.

Anyone interested in this old member of the band inking a one year minimum trial contract to see if he can still pound the drum???

I agree with Scott. With the way Stan likes to bring guys back into the fold, I can totally see him in an indian head sweater on opening night.

Loved the guy and wouldn't be opposed to bringing him back.

I think there is room to add 1-2 more forwards because guys like Ejdsell, Highmore, Kampf and Kahun could all use some Rockford time. So you're not "blocking" these young guys from a spot, they are simply just not ready until they prove otherwise.

Also, keep in mind injuries will happen.

Brouwer would add grit and maybe some goal scoring on the PP but he's really been trailing off so it would have to be on a 1M or less type deal. I think there are better options out there though.

LMAO

Speaking of ruts.....for all you coaches if you are going to do drills on your sheet of ice where kids are skating around cones, or nets....please move them around throughout your practice. The men's leagues players of the world would greatly appreciate it.

Canlan is seeing a major problem with this. All these idiot coaches think they are the second coming of Mike Babcock out there, and most of these goofs play mens league and are the idiots who cause most of the problems. Very scary they are teaching any youth "how to play".

- SteveRain

So many dumb coaches. I saw a HS coach bag skate his team of 25 guys or so, doing laps around the nets. They cut ruts in the ice basically down to the concrete. After a couple of passes and a ton of water it was still unsafe to skate on. I was coaching a mite/squirt practice afterwards and had to block off both ends at about the dots (no big deal for little guys, but still). I complained to the rink manager to have him comp me an extra time slot on "good" ice. Saw the same idiot coach line up his guys length wise for slap shot practice aiming at the side glass, needless to say they shattered 2 panes of glass.

What if Bowman wants him back? Who is the GM, who is the coach? If Q is such a great coach, coach the players the GM brings in.

When my son wanted to start playing years ago I thought it might be fun to sit and watch. He was playing D when the "coach" had him attacking the puck carrier in a 2 on 1 drill. Then I noticed he had all new stuff and he had drafted all the kids with hot moms. So I made it 1 practice but then I had to get involved. Most dads mean well but that guy was a clown.

So many bad habits set in young kids by bad coaches as mites and squirts. Poor skating techniques, poor skills, no understanding of passing and teamwork, play to win at all costs (or chose the kids with the hot moms).

Teaching kids proper skating techniques is the foundation for everything going forward. Also, don't let the kid that maybe a little more advanced in his technique just go end to end when he gets the puck. Teach him to use teammates, pass the puck and learn other aspects, even if it is at the cost of a few wins.

It amazes me how many kids I have seen that get to the AAA and Jr's levels of hockey, that still have such poor edge work, overall skating skills and game knowledge.
