Bennings words were spot on. If he wanted the playoffs his focus wouldn’t be on the bottom 6. He wants a little bit of grit, some hard working mentors and organizational depth. Seems rationale? - CanuckDon
He wants the depth so we don't get pushed around by ferland in the first round..... |

With Ferland now in Carolina, you must mean 4th round.
We going to Cup finals😍 |

Blah blah blah. How can you say he has earned it when he has never even played a game in North America? You saying that McCann didn’t earn a look in camp that year? He certainly wasn’t used as a top 6 forward. Everyone says don’t gift spots for kids, but they do it for veterans. And then JB announces that it will be young skilled players in the top 6 responsible for improving scoring this season. Sounds like he’s not only gifting spots, but gifting the good spots. - 1970vintage
Comparing EP to McCann is a cut dried easy call. Played against men. JB doles out TOI?

How can you be so sure he will be gone? He go hired into a position he wasn’t ready for, he got a contract extension even though he promised a competitive team and produced among the worst in the league 3 years in a row, and he outlasted the person who hired him.
Benning is a genius - 1970vintage
I don't know that he'll be gone by next year, but I do think Aquaman will hire a Pres of Hockey Ops within the year, and whoever that is might give Benning one more year before the golden handshake. So, I give JB two more years tops... |

Makes him a UFA next July 1st. They're all brain-dead in Ottawa these days. |

Of the long tenured teams who still hasn't won a Cup, 40+ year teams, just Buffalo and Vancouver? Oh and St. Louis. I think those are the three amigos who've never figured out. Of the list below, I say Winnipeg probably has the best odds right now.
St. Louis Blues
Buffalo Sabres
Vancouver Canucks
San Jose Sharks
Florida Panthers
Arizona Coyotes
Nashville Predators
Winnipeg Jets
Minnesota Wild
Columbus Blue Jackets
Vegas Golden Knights
Ottawa Senators (1992 incarnation) |

Gagner:
“It came a bit out of the blue for a lot of us,” said Gagner, the sixth-overall pick by Edmonton at the 2007 draft. “(Linden’s) meant a lot to the franchise with everything he’s been able to accomplish as a player and as an executive. You’re going to miss him in that role, but we have a lot of great people in our management group.
“The players, we don’t really worry about that too much. We’re excited to get to camp and get going.”

Until they find an owner who's committed to rebuilding properly through the draft, Canucks and their fans are in tough. Definitely some nice pieces onboard now but they need a lot more, or, every kid they've picked in the past three drafts to work out.
As a guy in his 50's and a fan for many years I've become pessimistic by nature now. They moulded me into this grumpy old (frank) |

It's looking bleak, and yes, a few years away without some magic.
The reason I like Benning is he doesn't do much, low risk, middle reward plays. At least he's not OTT or EDM making all these big, ridiculous, for need, bad trades. Just do almost nothing, keep drafting well and we'll be good. Like the Jets! Then all we need is the stars to align to win a Cup.
Be a top 8ish team in the NHL overall, get to playoffs, hope you get a hot goalie, stay healthy, and get a few bounces. Looks at the Caps, this last year was NOT their best team on paper. Just need to have a chance for as many years as you can and hope it comes together. 5-7 year window to win it. 5-7 year window to suck. Repeat.

Edit; except Jake, of course, as he is a top 9 ceiling. |

Would agree WPG for all intensive purposes do have the ingredients to get to the cup final in 2019. Big question is will Gary let a small market franchise win? Not likely. Even though they were gassed from the NSH series WPG still had to battle Gary's refs pretty hard in that VGK series..it will be interesting to be sure. |
