63 points more points then Burns in the last 7 seasons. 100 plus ahead of Buff in 3rd. He is a minus -31 where most other really good D are around +90

I like my top D to be good at playing defence. WOuldnt be top 5 on my list.

Exactly. I want my true number one dman to be able to play 30 minutes a night a night in ALL situations.

He would be considered a number 1 because the amount he can score. You would need very capable defenders to play with him. Ceci is not one.

He is a number one in terms of value for sure...he is just not a traditional number one. Whatever that means

I thought Karlsson plays like 28 mins/night?
He's a 2 x Norris trophy winner and a stud.

However, I would be concerned about his injuries and age catching up with him.
I wouldn't back up the truck and i think a lot of other teams are feeling the same way.
It's safer to wait until he goes to free agency and gives teams a year to see if he still is elite.

He’s also amazing on the PP and has played with a mediocre supporting cast compared to Burns and Byfuglien.

I agree that he’s not a great defender but that’s not as big of a deal when you can control the flow of the game.

I definitely can’t name 5 dmen I take over him for next season.

Fair enough. I agree to disagree here.

Canucks have had dmen who can play in all situations in the past and handle big minutes (Edler in his prime, Ohlund in his prime, contact year Bieksa, etc)

And despite that, they weren’t nearly as impactful as Karlsson. I think it’s an arbitrary way of thinking to automatically value guys who play well all 3 situations over guys who are just elite at 2 of the 3.

The same way I’d take prime Stamkos over prime Kesler or prime Ovechkin over prime Hossa

Those other 2 were able to play in all 3 situations but the offensive guys were just flat out more dominant.

Yeah, I agree about the injury, but recent history has shown in multiple sports that as long as the player is under 30, they usually do recover.

The thing is that all of them admit it takes more than a full year to get back to their “A game”. Just more recovery time + they finally get a normal off-season to train.

I expect Karlsson to have a better season this year and honestly wasn’t surprised that he had a “down year” by his standards last year.

Here is an interesting fact. Other then his first season Ottawa has made the playoffs every year he has been a plus defender. Don't when he's not.

Doughty, Hedman, Jones, Pietrangelo, Josi then Karlsson.

Josi over Subban hey? Interesting choice. Not a great defender IMO, and also if you look at advanced stats. I have Karlsson top 5. I've never been a fan enough to ever say he's number one but IMO only Hedman and Doughty are better. Any other choices are up for debate IMO, he just had an off year.

That too but Edmonton's D is nowhere near as good nor are the forwards once you get by McDavid and Draisitl

Subban is a liability on defence. Being flashy doesn't make you better.

Negative. McJesus is just too good to be out of the PO's for too long. If he plays the full 82 he'll break 120 its and will be involved in close to 50% of all Oilers scoring. They only need a few players to get them in Chia will get it done.

That's funny because advanced stats show that josi is a defensive liability. Subban has upped his defensive game big time in Nashville and gets no credit for it. There's a reason he was on the Norris ballot.

There an argument to be made that Karlsson has been the best player in the NHL the past 5 years let alone defenseman.

I don't think there has been anyone like him in the league since prime Lidstrom and Niedermayer. I might put him above those two as well considering the teammates they had.

I would say only Orr and Coffey were more impressive and he is in line with Bourque and some of the other all time greats.

Read this a while ago which tries to compare era's.

I'd put Karlsson at least on par with Coffey considering all the great players he played with for a majority of his career. Karlsson has barely had a Glen Andersson type of player, let alone Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Kurri, Francis et al.

That was my thought as well originally, it's hard to compare guys across era's. Many point more being the Karlsson is head and shoulders better than any other Dman in the league today IMO.
