New topic: Pick your top 3 Flyers breakout players for 18-19.
1. Nolan Patrick
Patrick, once finally healthy and with a little experience under his belt, began to show down the stretch what type of player he can be. Now that he's had an entire offseason to properly train and now knowing what it takes to succeed in the NHL, I'm predicting that Patrick has a monster, breakout season. I think he ends up playing north of 18 minutes per game and puts up 25 or so goals and 60-65 points.
2. Travis Sanheim
Sanheim has all the tools, skating, size, and skills, to be an impact defenseman in the NHL and I think this is the season it all starts to come together. I'm predicting that he will be part of the top 4, play on the 2nd pp unit, and get some PK time as well. Expect Sanheim to be playing 20 or so minutes per game and to put up 10+ goals and 30-35 points.
3. Carter Hart
Gonna go out on a limb with this one. I don't think he's with the Flyers on opening night, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he will be the Flyers #1 goalie by the trade deadline and that he will go on and lead the Flyers to their first playoff series win since 2012.

I think Patrick is a logical #1. Full off-season to train, etc.
I'm going with Lindblom as my #2. He has had a taste of the big leagues and didn't look out of place.
As for #3....I'm going with an "older" guy, Scott Laughton. This is the year he fulfills his draft year promise and takes the reins as the 3C.

I think the first two are no-brainers. As far as Hart is concerned, I think the only way that happens is if both Neuvirth and Elliott are out injured for significant periods of time and Hart is called up and runs with the opportunity, which certainly can happen. I think they'd use Lyon as a back up otherwise.

Yeah, I'm kind of expecting Neuvirth to go down at some point, it's pretty much a yearly occurrence. I'm not really sure what to expect from Elliott, he's not a kid and he's coming off major surgery. Also, it's not like he was a top notch #1 before he got hurt. IMO, Lyon is borderline backup at the NHL level and I'm not really expecting much from Stolarz as well.
So with all that being said, I'm predicting that Neuvirth goes down and Lyon comes up first. I don't think Lyon will be that successful and I think he gets replaced by Hart. Hart then clearly out plays Elliott and goes into the stretch drive as their #1.

Laughton and Lindblom would have been next on my list. I also gave a bit of thought to Myers who expect is playing in the Flyers top 6 before seasons end and to NAK who I think will win the 4RW spot out of camp

Speaking of going out on a limb, expecting Neuvirth to actually show up to camp without an injury.

I grew up about 20 minutes from it. Fond memories of my dad taking us down to the river to skip stones by the bridge. |

Yup, for sure. The sad thing is that it's really not a stretch. I think it's the most obvious reason that Hextall has no worries about carrying 5 goalies between the Flyers and Phantoms. Between Neuvirth's history and what Stolarz went through last season, I don't think they will have a numbers issue for very long.

I agree. I think tapping the brakes on Hartamania is needed for this season. |

I don't think it's Hartmania as much as it is that I have no faith in Neuvirth being able to stay healthy, very little faith in either Lyon or Stolarz being legit NHL goalies or Elliott being any more than average at best.
Like I said yesterday, it's not like Hart needs to unseat Hasek in his prime.

FWIW, I don't expect NAK to have a breakout season (I also guess it's how you view a breakout), but I do expect him to be given a shot with the big club. Leier was given a fair bit, so I hope NAK does too, and I think he sticks around.
My top three are Patrick, Laughton and Lindblom. I think you'll see development with Sanheim, but the following year will be his breakout season. |

I think we all assume that the team, as it is currently constructed, is still two or three years away from being serious Cup contenders. Running with a combination of Elliott, Nuevey, Lyon, Stolie this year won't diminish our chances of making playoffs and hoping for a first-round win.
Now, let's just say that all the pieces come together. We improve the PK, our young d corps plays above their heads. Secondary scoring and team defense are strong. All of the guys we have identified as needing to step up actually step up. We are 1st place in Metro, near top of conference. If the only question mark at the halfway point is goaltending and Carter Hart is playing well in AHL, do we ride him?
Thoughts on what Hexy should or would do in that situation?

I think you owe it to the team, if they are in playoff position, to give them the best chance possible to win. If Hextall feels that Hart is the best goalie they have, then you go with him. We've all seen what a hot goalie can do for a solid playoff team.
Also Hart seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders and I think he will be able to mentally handle whatever happens so I don't see there being a lot of risk. If they are a bubble team that's one thing, but if your scenario plays out and they are at the top, or even near the top of the Metro, then Hextall owes it to his players to give them the best chance possible at succeeding in the post season. If Hart is their best goalie, you go with him.

Agreed. I have been so impressed with Carter Hart's make-up, preparation, and off-ice training. He seems to be ready to handle all that awaits him in Philly. |

Understood, but even with a complete breakdown of Elliott and Neuvirth I think it's asking too much of Hart to step in. I wouldn't mind seeing him get his feet wet in the NHL this year but relying on him to own the crease this season? I don't think so, Tim. |
