Carol Schram: Canada wins gold in Edmonton & prospect wrapup on Hughes, DiPietro, Utunen Hockey fans got a tantalizing glimpse of hockey's future stars as Canada took home the gold medal in the inaugural edition of the re-worked Hlinka Gretzky Cup, plus final thoughts on Quinn Hughes, Michael DiPietro and Toni Utunen from last week's World Junior Showcase.

The Hlinka Cup was amazing this year. It was great to see Canada win gold in Edmonton. I found an article on nhlprospectreport.ca talking about Alexis Lafreniere. They wrote a solid article on why Elias Pettersson could win the Calder trophy this year as well. They are both definitely worth a read!

Very in depth blog Carol great job

I watched . Vasili Podkolzin yesterday for the first time and wow. He has some slick power goals and a great shot.

Lafreniere is a great prospect also some good young players coming up soon

Something that minivan said yesterday really stuck in my head . It finally penetrated this thick skull. If Eriksson is a good fourth liner why should I care about his cost. It is not ideal but the idea is to dress the best team. His 13 goals would surely be better than Gaunces. He is reliable defensively and can score more than any of our current fourth line players . Loui Gaudette and Schaller could be a fourth line that produces 35-50 goals

I honestly don't think we end up bottom 5 next year for this reason alone.

Benning is too honest and at TDL when teams see they have no chance, about 6 of them start nose diving for top pick and Canucks start winning.

I think the league has 6 better tankers than Canucks

I think that while the addition by subtraction of the sedins and the addition of petterson, i think we are maginally better standings wise. The problem i feel, is that arizona, buffalo, chicago, new york, all got equally better. I think petterson/boeser will have good/great years, but returning with the same defense wont get us much further.

Ill go on record right now. Filip Broberg wont be a top 5 pick. Not even a top 10. He plays like Edler.

I don’t think it’s a lack of effort, he’s always played that way. He’s not a guy who will be all over the puck, he tries to find the soft spots and likes to be a playmaker as well. Looks like he’s lost a step and he was never that fast to begin with.

The good thing is that he actually backchecks so like you said, he can useful in a bottom 6 role and even PK too. The contract is still a poison pill but “it is what it is.”

10 goals from a bottom 6 winger who is reliable defensively. You can do worse.

Prime Edler was pretty damn good. I don’t think a team wood be upset picking that type of player in the 6-10 range. Especially with how hard it is to find good dmen.

I don't see it , Buffalo okay but I don't think there is huge separation between us and the Sabers.

I think Chicago is starting their free fall . That is an old team

New York gave away a lot of players lets see. Lunqvist did not play well lst year.

Arizon solid D sh1t forwards

Sabers have a really nice core in place. I think they could be the team to surprise. Middlestadt, dahlin, and skinner will all help.
Arizona just got galchenyuk, who i think will easily pot 30, where domi got 5.
New york will be using quite a few prospects but i think they could still be half decent.
Chicago is a wildcard for me, could surprise, could flail.
Vancouvers D is the main reason i think we wont improve much statistically. Truly feel we have a bottom 3 defense in the league.

Edler in his prime is still more of a 15-20 pick in most drafts.

Fixed. How many people on here have said that Edler was a bad player for us in his prime?

Given points/games played, prime edler was a fantastic player for us. 6-10 might be a bit of a stretch, but a mid to late 1st round pick i would absolutely agree with
