Not really. Provorov is a franchise building defender. He will get paid. I feel like Ellis is more a complimentary type defender like Gostisbehere. Great to have but not someone you would technically build around. - J35Bacher
I agree with this opinion. |

what was worse
JVR for Schenn
or

I think we can build around both. The only reason people you don't think you can build around Ellis is because they have so many other defenders, which ironically may have driven the price of Ellis' extension down like some have suggested
The contract won't be too comparable to Provorov because most of these years are UFA years and also he hasn't scored a ton of points. Injury from last years playoffs kept his point totals down. |

Just imagine that team if they didn’t luck out on McDavid. |

A prime contender for worst NHL trade of the decade. |

Hall for Larsson has high potential to exceed the awfulness of the JVR for Schenn deal, but I still think JVR for Schenn trade was worse.
If Hall puts up a couple more 90 point years (his first year with the Devs was 53 points), then the Hall deal will blow the JVR deal out of the water.

Hall for Larsson is worse. JVR is good, Hall is a superstar. Basically the Oilers traded a Hart trophy winner for a younger, slightly better version of AMac. |

As bad of a trade JVR for Schenn was, when you consider everything it made sense at the time (to a degree). It was 100% a panic move but coming off the Pronger injury and NJD series where our defense was exposed and you saw how badly we needed a RHD. Plus JVR was injury riddled that season and we were pretty stacked on the wings at the time. I hated the move but it makes more sense when comparing it to the Hall-Larsson trade. |

Yup, the Hall for Larsson deal was just flat out terrible and should have cost Chiarelli his job. |

Yes. You can build around a guy like Gostisbehere but he isn't a franchise type. I think he has top end offensive skills and his defensive game improved greatly but he isn't Provorov. Provorov scored 17 goals without top unit PP time while also playing against the top lines every night.
I love both players. And the Flyers will build around them and Myers and Snaheim...but having Provorov is the key.

Yah..this is the trade that i think is brutal and to me its not even close when compared to Schenn for JVR..
Hall for Larsson has to go down as one of the worst ever. |

having Ghost helps Provy, takes the pressure off the O side. I said it earlier, there are things Ghost can do that very few in the league can, including Provy and most on that top 20 list. |

Do you expect me to believe that playing good players with other good players leads to good results!? |

hell no that would be crazy.
funny had Adam Oates at our rink, he held a coaching session for the coaches of the kids leagues. He said, "don't care how old, play good players with good players, the bad ones probably will go play another sport anyway".

That is Ellis' 3rd contract. It's basically a UFA deal. Provorov will be on his first contact out of his EL deal and he will be an RFA.

Trades sometimes don't work out and need a lot of times can make a GM willing to overpay. The most important thing to keep in mind is what a GM's job is. His job is to build a team and to win games, not necessarily win every trade. RH defenseman are a premium in this league. Neither trade has worked out but the moves were made for specific needs.
