Justin,
Have you heard anything thru the vine about how the vets feel about such a lack of movement this summer by management? Or maybe they are buying into the longer term picture of a stellar D in 2/3 years where they can be a strong cup contender. - glennjpawlak22
All I've heard is the core know they under pressure to perform this year. They know that they have to pull their weight better than last year.
I'm only assuming, but one would think they would have liked to see a little more help added but they've got a lot to prove themselves.
The core of Keith, Seabrook and Toews specifically are fierce competitors and want to win more than anything. They need to start playing up to their level. Sounds like those 3 will be out to prove the naysayers this year with a strong offseason prep.

You are right. They don't HAVE to pay these two. They still would have to pay someone to put up those points, which would cost about the same amount of money, no? I guess my point was that it doesn't matter who they pay, but they can't simply spend the cap space they have right now, because one way or the other, they need to pay for additional scoring (outside of Toews, Kane and Saad are expected to cone) which is never cheap. - Chunk
Good post. I'm with you on this one: although the players that the Hawks need to pay for top 6 forwards -- or top 4 defenders and starting goalie for that matter -- don't necessarily need to be Schmaltz and DeBrincat, they need to be someone else who will cost within the same range +/- a million on either side.
I for one am happy with how DeBrincat and Schmaltz are developing and am glad they are on our team, so hoping they eventually get locked up whether that's through a bridge deal first or straight to a long-term contract.
Also, I wouldn't necessarily throw Toews/Kane money at DeBrincat and Schmaltz. They're not on the same level when 19 and 88 were within their first few years of their careers. However, I also think comparables like Scheifele, Ehlers, Larkin, etc. need to be considered, i.e. # of games played, offensive totals, game situation deployment, etc.
Just because Schmaltz, for example, isn't physical enough or doesn't shoot enough or doesn't win enough faceoffs doesn't negate all of the great things he does provide the Hawks and make him lesser value than say Scheifele. |

Ellis got Seabrook money! - VopatsRash
So, you're happy that a player got paid too much money? And he didn't win anything? This is what you cheer for? This makes you happy?
Did anyone explain the game to you? |

He's on an AHL contract so he's not getting to the show anytime soon. |

You should remember that I always disliked Alligator Arms Tuevo. I’d take Schmaltz and/or Debrincat over Tuevo every day of the week.

DeBrincat maybe, Schmaltz no.
The Ducks signed Kase for $2.6 million, that’s a fair comparable for Schmaltz. |

Kase with a 47 point pace over 82 games last year with 20G 18A in 66 games and signed 3 years at $2.6mil vs Schmaltz's 54 point pace for 82 games with 21G 31A in 78 games.
Maybe 3 years at $4mil as a bridge contract is an option for #8??

Pretty much what it sounds like...think the Clampett’s from Beverly Hillbilles, but without the money or proud ownership of a fifth grade education like Jethro.

Just me guess here...neither the Blackhawks nor Schmaltz want a bridge deal. The going rate for a 60 point top 6 forward is around $5.5 to $6.5 million.
You can argue where Schmaltz fits within this range but this is what we can expect the Hawks to pay for a 5 - 8 year deal. The situation will be similar (not exact, but similar) for DeBrincat next summer.
Sean Monahan - $6.375
Mark Scheifele - $6.125
Dylan Larkin - $6.1
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - $6.0
Filip Forsberg - $6.0
Nikolaj Ehlers - $6.0
Artemi Panarin - $6.0
Jonathan Huberdeau - $6.0
Aleksander Barkov - $6.0
Jonathan Drouin - $5.5
Bo Horvat - $5.5
Note: Some of these deals are already a couple years old so they may be undervalued based on today's standards. |

Pronman has graded out the Hawks at 14 in the Athletic as far as farm systems.
https://theathletic.com/4...no-14-chicago-blackhawks/
I’m sure it’s an error as I’ve read numerous times here Stan and crew can’t identify NHL talent. - HawkintheD
McD and his meddling ways probably bribed Pronman. No way the Hawks should rank any higher than 30th. Too many Euro-smurfs and college-smurfs. |

I would be happy with $5mil x 5 years for each guy. 25-30 goals and 60ish points is worth at least $5mil in today's NHL (remember our 50ish point $10.5 million dollar man has set the bar). Both Cat and Schmaltz are young enough to really cash in again in 5 years, and $10mil for Cat and Schamltz (two top 6 players) would be a solid investment given their age and upside. But, lets be honest, with the exception of the Cap "Cheating" contracts with Hossa + Keith, and Hammer's $4.5mil deal, Stanley Bowman has overpaid EVERY SINGLE PLAYER he has signed to a contract. Even a Euro 3rd pair guy like Rutta who was healthy scratched gets a 200% raise from StanBo. - EnzoD
