You can count a former teammate among those optimistic about Jeff Skinner's fit with the Buffalo Sabres' top center, Jack Eichel.

"I think him and Eichel will be an exciting pair," former Carolina Hurricanes center Zach Boychuk told The Buffalo News. "I don’t think Jeff has played with a superstar right-handed center before so he might get a lot more passes."

"Jeff is one of the purest goal scorers in close around the net," Boychuk said. "He’s had some up and down seasons but consistently puts up over 20 goals. He has a high ceiling and can create scoring chances by himself. In a few of his seasons he’s even putting up 20 goals from the third line, mixed in with a lot of power-play time ...

"From his figure skating background, he can do some pretty insane edge work even during games which not many people can do."

As you can see, Skinner's contract fits pretty easily. The only year where it really gets tight is 2021-2022, the last year of Berg's deal. That said, it shouldn't be too painful to move Berg with a year left on his deal should these numbers come to pass and there are also plenty of options for creating space (choose not to re-sign Scandy or Sheary, move Ok or McCabe, etc.).

The eye-opening thing for me as I put this together is that even with Skinner there is so much room most years that another fairly high-priced (think around $5M) player could be brought in without too much trouble. Anyone got any ideas on who that guy should be?

Nope

Bogo has 2yrs left, so we should be able to move him after this season

Sekera has 3yrs left, plus he’s a LH defenseman... and we definitely don’t need another one (unless it’s a clear upgrade over Scandella, which Sekera isn’t imo)

But we really don’t need more bottom6 guys

just get picks/prospects for any guys we move out

Not sure those parts get you that, but I like where the head is at. 3 for 1 or 2 for 1 trades should be his only motivation.

Take one, flip that make two, double that makes a fo-mack. By then everyone will know Botts got dimes and nicks.

Replace Nylander with Girgs/Larsson &
I’m fine- EDM might see either as a

Strome has been playing the wing
Plus we have Sobatka or E Rod for 4C
And guys like Malone, O’Regan & Asplund who are all close to being up here

I just don’t see Strome as part of the future here in any way...
much rather just have a draft pick instead of him
