You think 6 points is his maximum performance in an NHL season? - NorthNuck
Even if he doubles that doesn't mean he is a 5-6 quality D man, yes there needs to be more production from the back end but there also needs to be better defensive play from the back end.
I know that the analytics types here love to say well look so and so isn't as bad as he is made out to be. Analytics have there place, but they are also subjective and do not paint the entire picture.
Hutton in my opinion will be planted in the press box unless he focused on nothing but conditioning and skills all summer. |

I know there's a dividing line between traditionalists and analytics people and I agree you need both sides to determine if a player is good, but if the sides disagree so vehemently then maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle ground.
On the other hand Gudbranson looks terrible to the eye test and when you look at his analytics they paint him as one of the worst Dmen in the entire NHL, much closer ground on that one between the 2 sides. |

I also think the article made more of a point that hutton is due to be better than last year, but doesnt paint him to be a good offensive (or defensive lol) defenseman by any stretch. Truth be told, outside of edler and tanev, our current 7 signed defenseman are pretty awful. I always ask, where would they all slot on a good D team like Nashville or Tampa, and would they even crack the roster.. probably no |

I prefer bashing Hutton than Gaunce. Gaunce is just toooo easy - CanuckDon
Willing to bet if we moved Gaunce to the 5-6 D slot and Hutton to the 4LW spot they would produce more.

Come on man, he is a 1B defense man, of course he is on the selling season ticket poster, who else would they choose? Gaunce? - Makita

There is no hope for mdz or gudbranson, they will be bad no matter what. But they can hype the shlt out of the boys better than the rest of them - Codes1087

Gudbranson looks great to the eye test.

"He's not a middle pairing Dman, maybe could be some day."
"Richardrider!!"
When did i say we should keep him long term?? - NorthNuck
Middle pair is top4, thinking that he is or ever will be based on his two years in the league is delusional. |

this is a make or break year for him, we'll see how he approaches it. If he can't come into camp prepared at this point in his career then he's not Canuck material.
It's a fresh start for him this season so it's up to him. |

Sure. I think he could possibly get back to his rookie season form, but that's still bottom pair. Stecher has played better and gets a lot less love. I'd be shocked if he played well and yes it is all on him to into camp ready to rock. Best possible scenario is he plays well enough to recover the 4th we spent on Pouliot. In general, expecting more out of this d corps isn't much to ask considering how bad they were, but I just don't see it. |

In the grand scheme of things, imagine our standards being so low that we are discussing the same 6 defenseman, who were all apart of being a bottom 5 defense in the league last year, being extended for another whole year. Unless benning is able to make a trade, he should be taking a lot more flack for being so daft in thinking this group can miraculously be better |

I wonder if JB will offer Seguin 10 mil plus next summer. Knows him, he's really young for a UFA and slots into the first line. I could kind of see it, but only if they are the highest bidders. |

I'm just speculating here, but I suspect one of the things TL wanted to do to compete is upgrade the D. If they are tanking (and I think they might be), surest way to do so is to put that same group of D/G's out there IMO.
