Dumb, imho. It's a wearable number. - Scoob
Did we miss an opportunity to hate Patrick Kane BEFORE he scored that goal? |

Don't be surprised if Balmas gets one of the open contracts the Flyers have after rookie camp. I mean, its not as if they are going to sign a free agent. Balmas plays a really complete game, is big enough, and still growing, has a strong stick and is tough on the boards, and can make plays and score. He played better and better as the stakes got higher for Acadia. He could easily be a bottom six NHL wing in a few years. - hockeyal
Balmas is 20 years ole and signing him to an ELC would tie up a contract for 3 years so the fact that they might not sign a free agent for this season really doesn't matter.

I always thought it made little sense to make a number off limits but not retire it.
Hart can wear a different number. It shouldn't be a huge deal and isn't even really something worth debating. - hereticpride
But it also doesn't make sense to officially retire a player's number who only played 157 games for the Flyers.
Him passing away so young makes it a special case. |

Flyers prob win the cup that year if they had him instead of Chicago.
Which likely means Richards and Carter are not dealt. Funny how life works. |

Yeah, after all, most of the Flyers' staff and all of their players have been men, and men don't ever have emotional attachments to anything. - jmatchett383

Yes, and Since Ron Hextall is smarter than you, they will sign him if he plays they way he did in the Memorial Cup in rookie camp. When they send Frost to the Soo, the Flyers will only have 47 contracts, since his will go back to slide. If they want to get fancy, they could even sign him to a contract beginning in 2019. They will shed a bunch of dead wood on June 30, freeing up plenty of contract slots. |

Your comment here doesn't make any sense. I didn't state that they would or wouldn't sign him. I stated that your comment that it's not as if they are going to sign a free agent didn't make any sense with an ELC bringing a 3 year term.

So what you are telling me is that if the Flyers signed a couple of forwards and were at 50 contracts they would sign him? OK genius.
And how does his three year term make any difference. Every year, contracts roll off, some slide and new ones come on. So it WOULD matter for the # of contracts in 18-19 (where the Flyers are close to the limit) but not later when they are likely to not be. SO your comment made no sense. |

This genius is going to spell it out for you as simple as I can. The fact that the Flyers don't appear to be going to use a contract spot to sign a free agent in the near future does not in any way factor into whether the Flyers are going to sign Balmas to an ELC.
