Indeed these bonuses (~1,8M) are earned and payed, the league just allows to move them forward capwise. Leafs this year have a carry-over of $2,55M (due capfriendly).

First of all let's state for the record that I have never once insulted you personally while you have insulted me personally umpteen times. Usually when I've made a point like on this blog that you can't refute and when I give irrefutable evidence that you are indeed wrong.

So let's review. You made the statement that Matthews will be playing this year for under a million dollars in salary and used the erroneous statement that's because the Leafs can "defer" his cap hit until next year. You ignorantly thought that also included his salary for bonuses. I pointed out to you factually that using the bonus cushion the only thing that can be deferred is the cap hit on a team's cap for the bonus portion of his cap hit. The actually salary that a player earns in performance bonuses while on an ELC contract is not deffer-ed and is paid out to the player in full for that season. That is a fact! It is a fact that you were wrong! It is a fact that you repeatedly claim that someone's argument is ludicrous without substantiating that claim in any manner.

You then proceeded to double down, ignore that you were wrong and then took the conversation in the direction like you did in your above post. That is James Tanner's M.O. to a tee when he is proven wrong. Which happens often. The king of fallacies! You don't have an argument here because you're obviously uninformed in how players contracts, salaries, and the salary cap works. I proved that beyond any doubt.

Most later round picks don't ever play an NHL game, but if you can get lucky to get a few of them to play a role on the team then I would consider that a success. Trades on the other hand are best when filling in needed roles. Trading for young players (the ones with a higher ceiling) tend to cost a bit of future and like you said are rare to come by, which is why I placed trades before lower round picks since they almost never pan out.

Because the Leafs are Tanner's favorite team I'm going to see how long they were at it in order to become competitive.

2009 - 7th overall Kadri

2015 - 4th overall Marner
2016 - 1st overall Matthews

So in essence it took the Leafs nine years of building through the draft to establish the core of players that made them a good team last year.

They supplimented those core players by trading Kessel for a 1st rounder they used to get Andersen and got Gardiner by taking on Anaheim cap dump Lupul but the core of their players were drafted over a nine year time-frame.
