I think it won't be a problem during the regular season.

But in the playoffs, where teams simply do not score as much as they usually do, you need to win those tight one goal games.... and the Leafs will need an upgraded defense to do so.

The series vs Boston proved that much.

That's of course, just my opinion.

- Scabeh

true, they can look at an upgrade later in the season or TDL. they will at that point have lots of space to add somene

You think Mark Stone is worth that much? I wouldnt trade Pavel Zacha for Mark Strone staright up.
- Archaic

Have you watched Zacha hockey? He's remarkably average.

The Cap hit of $7.8M per season until the end of time will scare teams away.. Plus, his salary doesn't really drop until the 2022-23 season.
Maybe, you can trade him to Arizona in 2023? Assuming, Arizona still has a team then..

- PatC80

The cap hit won't be so bad with the cap going up.... and I really do believe, assuming everything goes right with his recovery, that Weber is the kind of player who will remain useful despite growing older. (Think Chara for example).

He will be overpaid at some point but I guess that's the problem you take to add such a great player on your team.

I can't wait to see him back on the ice.

Suzuki.

the question will be Suzuki as a Center or Suzuki as a winger who becomes a center later on...

Not saying they don’t and seems like they do since they’re not using all there cap space.
- ClarksonDavid

I think they are just gonna wait and see how much Willie costs and they probably do'nt do a thing till the trade deadline when the hit is a third of the salary.

He's the crazy thing, though: you really only need to judge if he can be a good player for the next 4 years.

After that, Nashville simply has to make a trade to get him back. If the dude retires, the cap hit to Nashville is so cray-cray, they probably wouldn't be able to ice a team.

If Weber decides to retire instead of showing up for his final season (to collect a measly $1 million), the cap hit penalty is $24.57 million.

Nashville has to re-obtain his rights to send him to Robidas Island.

I'd be willing to entertain a deal for Weber, and not worry about 5 years out - because Nashville is the one who has to worry about that.

Also, Montreal doesn't seem to have a problem trading with Toronto.

The league would probably step in and overrule the penalty, but I can't see him retiring early....he'll just go on IR.

From the Leafs perspective, we can't really afford to take on Weber.. We don't have a bad contract to trade and I doubt Montreal would accept a trade that included Nathan Horton in it.

The only reason the Leafs trade for him, should be to piss off Nashville..

I would give up Gardiner and a 1st.
And a second if it was a deal breaker.

Suzuki.

Oh us Leaf fans know what it's like giving up a star player for pretty much nothing.
And don't give me that crap that we got Andersen, that was a totally seperate deal.

exactly.
If Habs retain 2.5M it could work out nicely for everyone except Nashville

What? what is the difference between 30th pick and 31st pick? cause the Leafs had both and i'm sure could have used either one.
If the Leafs didn't have that 30th pick you think Anaheim would have not taken the 31st.

Do you have proof that they would have taken the 31st overall pick?

At the time, the Ducks were asking for a 1st rd pick for Andersen. You are assuming that they would just say "sure, why not?"

Well they did not do better than 30th, so yeah, I think they would have taken 31st.
