That's fine. But I don't want our players going out with the mindset "We have to run around and hit everything that moves as hard as we can because one of our players got hit hard last night." If you go with that mindset every time a player gets injured, you're gonna spend a lot practicing that PK.

I don't want to see them get pushed around, but it should fall on every player, be it Weal or Morin, to stand up for their teammate. I DEFINITELY don't want Wayne Simmonds fighting a 4th liner like Martin, and I don't want a lineup spot going to a guy like Goulborune (in the regular season) just because maybe a player will throw a cheap hit.

Just curious did you play ice hockey at any decent level ?

He's not fighting for a roster spot. They traded for him. Lou wanted him back with the Islanders to have that tough 4th line.
- J35Bacher

Yes he is and playing time as well. Bottom line is he did his job. That’s how he plays and having anyone in the flyers lineup isn’t going to change that.

No he's not. He's got a spot on that team. They love that 4th line of Clutterbuck, Martin,Cizikas.

Don't have a problem with the hit, tho.

- VladDrag

Apparently, you have to wait another 2 weeks to be able to throw that hit.

No, the rookies vs. vets thing was the whole "Veterans don't have to try but rookies do," argument that someone always likes to use as his trump card.

So okay, Morin smashes a dude in a vulnerable position and the dude gets up. Good. What if the dude crumpled to the ice and had to get stretchered off? Does that all of a sudden make the hit any more predatory/dangerous to the prone player?

Again, I'm not saying Martin did the right thing. I'm just saying he also didn't do the wrong thing, and that Sanheim (and Folin) share in the blame as well for having Sanheim be in that position in the first place. Also not saying I want then Flyers to be passive, but I don't want it to have to fall to one or two guys, who may not bring much else to the table, to handle it.

- jmatchett383

Are we looking at the right hit? Morin doesn't even smash a dude. It is a completely clean hit with a guy bracing for the hit on the boards. Devils preseason game?

And they dude didn't crumple or get stretched off so it's not part of the scenario. What happened to Sanheim was avoidable. But there did seem to be a game plan to run around a hit everything buy the Islanders as a game plan.

In my initial post I didn't say I want someone to be dirty or hurt someone. But I don't want them to be passive and turn the cheek either. Part of a close team is a team that stands up for one another.

Apparently you keep thinking the hit was legal or clean as there was a penalty on the play.

How about going with it's September and it's a meaningless pre season game so instead of bowling over a player in a vulnerable position you let up a little on a player?
- MJL

This isn’t some fantasy game. This is professional hockey at the highest level and if you’re out there competing as a player you better damn well treat it like your job is on the line. Matt martin’s roster spot is not guaranteed and he’s not going to make the team based on the fact he’s going to fill the back of the net. Martin just showed his coaches and organization exactly why they need to make a spot for him on the roster. The second you coast in this league is the second you get benched for a look from a young up and coming player. Martin is doing exactly as he should.

I agree with this 100%. But that should fall to every player on the team, not a few individuals.

I know it's a different era, but think back to the BSB. Every team had a few goons back then, but if poop went down, the Flyers didn't need to send out a goon, because every player would stand up for every player. So it should have fallen to every player last night, even without Sanheim getting injured, to play a physical (controlled) brand.

Exactly. Martin knew he had a vulnerable player that he had no chance to protect himself. That whole line and Turcotte were just running around all game hitting everything
- J35Bacher

right, and when guys like that are on the ice you need to be aware of it and protect yourself. Honestly, I don't really look to blame anyone here. It's hockey. It happens. I hope Sanheim is OK and can get back on the ice soon.

Well said, maybe Sanheim should not turn around like Bambi when a guy is coming in hard. Hopefully he learned a lesson, this is the NHL not a Sunday skate.

But again that is the reason certain guys are on a roster. Is Simmonds as great as he is if he doesn't bring other intangibles?

I think you said you didn't want to see Simmonds fight a guy like Martin but in all honesty that is kind of his role. Especially now as he has been pushed down to what looks like a 3rd line role.

People loved to complain about Manning but one thing he did was fight so guys like Simmonds maybe had to do it less.

So hextall plans to provide an update today about sanheim? Hope it's not too bad.

Wasn't happy with the hit after seeing it although it wasn't crazy vicious or anything.

Sanheim prob could have protected himself better, and Martin probably could have eased up. In the end hope sanheim is not out long term.

See how this develops tonight. I could see animosity developing between these two squads with how many games we have against them in the preseason here.

Anyone else see that it looks like Crawford could be on the shelf for a while in Chicago to start the season?

Could that be the spot where possibly you move Neuvirth? Allows you then to keep Elliott/Lyon and then run Hart/Stolarz in Lehigh?

- J35Bacher

Certainly worth a phone call. Hextall has to pretty much know he's not re-signing Neuvirth so if you can get an asset for him, even a late round pick, you might as well move him.

So let's say Simmonds is in the lineup last night. He sees the hit, and goes over and fights Martin. He throws a punch, hits Martin's helmet with a bare knuckle, and breaks his hand. Great, now we've lost a top-4 (hopefully) defenseman, as well as a top-9 winger and top PP specialist because he wanted to fight a 4th line no-skill goon.

I'm not saying Simmonds shouldn't fight him, I'm saying I want everyone to want to fight the guy, or at least retaliate back with a more physical game. Again, I don't want it to fall to 1-2 guys, and I don't want anyone in the lineup because they make for a good punching bag.

True. You may see some star players coast now and then in preseason, but it's rare to see that from bottom 6 forwards or 3rd pair Dmen.

He'll play the majority of games, if healthy. It depends on what the team does standings-wise. If Ryan Reaves got moved for a 1st round pick, and then got traded at the TDL, Martin has to be worth at least a 2nd rounder and teams obviously still covet that kind of player.

Would you rather have Simmonds or Giroux break their hand in a fight?

I want all the guys to stand for each other....but if I have to pick a guy there are some I prefer not to lose in that instance.
