This isn’t some fantasy game. This is professional hockey at the highest level and if you’re out there competing as a player you better damn well treat it like your job is on the line. Matt martin’s roster spot is not guaranteed and he’s not going to make the team based on the fact he’s going to fill the back of the net. Martin just showed his coaches and organization exactly why they need to make a spot for him on the roster. The second you coast in this league is the second you get benched for a look from a young up and coming player. Martin is doing exactly as he should.

The idea that if a player in an early pre season game lets up or passes up one opportunity to lay a hit on a vulnerable player is not competing and putting his roster spot in jeopardy is absurd.

Fun stuff. I miss the days when preseason games featured a half dozen or so fights per game.

What I love there is how quickly Morin moved over to cut the rush off. Long strides to cover lots of ice.

I initially laughed at the Weal as 3C line when Hexy first mentioned it. But Hexy was on the staff that drafted him and he followed Weal's development. Weal played mostly C in the AHL and I watched some highlights. He looked good. Fast, saw the ice well and facilitated the action. He alos buried his chances (highlights, of course). Not sure how he is defensively and his size is not ideal but I would like to see him in the role during the preseason. If he earns it, good on him. If not, we trade him. No loss.

Whoever plays third line center, I hope this guy is everything we hope he will be. Not only do I think we’ll be good, we need to be. Third line center is a hole on a team that should be second or third in the Metropolitan division.
