i'm not saying i disagree with you.

i'm saying that training camp and pre-season are great for finding "fools gold."

this team has been bad for so long that fans are so eager to see any hope of promise from the youngsters. sure, a lot of the team's vets suck but lets not forget this is just training camp/preseason. it doesn't take much for a youngster to look good when the team sucks. steve kariya anyone?

if you have the philosophy that only the players that played the "best" in training camp should make the team; does this not flow into the season? after how many games do you re-evaluate? do you send down/call up every 5-10 games based on who's playing the best?

probably not. which is why, "whoever's playing the best out of training camp," sounds great but isn't the full story as to who stays and who gets sent down.

Yeah, I get that it's a small sample size. Especially if anyone is using point totals as the measuring tool. There's also off-season rust, chemistry issues and just disorganized play at times during pre-season. But what's there to lose if they choose to keep up the players who played the best in camp and pre-season?

I don't see much of a downside to losing a 12th/13th forward caliber players on waivers.

And yeah, if Dahlen or Gaudette have a great pre-season and you keep them up, but they struggle after 10 regular season games, I don't think sending them down after those 10 games is going to suddenly ruin their future in this league. If they're good enough players whop are dedicated, they'll figure out what they have to work on while playing in the AHL.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Kassian/Brodziak line start running around.

we can agree to disagree without getting into the name calling their vintsy, you were better than that. The Jets/Preds were mediocre/bad in the past, but I am talking about today, not the past.

I think good/great teams rely on ELC's to fill out the middle/bottom of their line up. Chicago did it during their window of winning the cup, pens have done the same. I personally don't think gaunce/Archibald/granlund are players I would be willing to lose sleep over if we lost them, but that's just me. I think there are better ways for top teams to round out their roster, than to claim fringe 4th line players from bottom 10 teams, just me though.

Here is where you are wrong. The Canucks upgraded their 4th line with glue guys. We can agree, better players than Gaunce and Granlund, but they paid through the nose to do that, both in terms of real dollars and term. Washington has replaced Beagle with Magma. Is Gaunce or Granlund an upgrade on Megan? Pittsburgh relies on the best they can find for the lowest dollar at the bottom of the roster because Crosby/Malkin/Letang/Kessel take up a huge portion of their cap. I am saying the guys we could lose are actually solid 4th line guys, but they are trying to make this team as 3rd liners, because the 4th line is sewed up tight. I won’t loose sleep over loosing Gaunce or Granlund to waivers, I will freaking laugh my ass off if they try to send Virtanen down because he hasn’t shown enough...

megna signed a two-way/one year contract.. Megna was not signed to be anything more than a depth/injury call up. He was never signed to replace beagle lol

I am pretty sure they replaced Beagle with Dowd, who only makes 800k or league minimum, who statistically is better than beagle, younger, and makes a lot less money. They also have Chandler Stephenson, that aussie who played wing last year on the cup winning team, who is a natural center.

Stephenson isn't the aussie, that was someone else.

you are right. I think the Aussie was actually Nathan walker. Either way, WSH has 4 Center's locked, without mentioning dowd or megna

At this point, they will certainly have to expose some players to waivers, they simply have too many. If they loose a player like Granlund, you know they are going to need to replace him later in the season because of injuries. Do you believe they will find a better player on the waiver list later in the season? Just send Dahlen, Gaudette et al down and then bring them up slowly during the course of the season.
- 1970vintage

I think there will be 30 GMs lined up outside Rogers arena to see who Canucks cut.

I bet Doug Wilson is licking his chops waiting for Granlund to be waived
