Pacific Conference 2018:

San Jose
LA
Edmonton
Calgary
Anahiem
Arizona
Vegas
Vancouver

The ones I'm most sure about are the top and the bottom, but pacific has gotten a lot better over the summer. I could see Anahiem slipping further if Getzlaf continues to have injury problems. Thoughts?

I bet against Vegas all last year, and they kept winning. I’m with you, I think they slip back into the pack, but maybe not. Edmonton is probably too high as well.

I heard he looked out of shape by one guy and today he was practicing with the group trying to make the Canucks not the regular group. The broadcaster was wondering if Green was sending him a message.

Everyone heard he was checking everything in sight yesterday but I have heard two people comment on his off season training.

thanks! I noted he was with the wannabes and not the veteran group and don't imagine it was a casual decision by Green...just hadn't heard / seen enough to have any context around the choice.

Edmonton is going to come out of the gate slow and MacLennen will get canned. They sneak into the playoffs with new coaching.

A few preseason game notes:

Edm vs. Cal just started in Calgary. It's streaming on the Oilers and Flames websites.

This should be pretty close to the Flames team the Canucks see on Wednesday, since the vets are in China. Vancouver plays Edmonton tomorrow so it'll probably mostly be guys who aren't in tonight's lineup.

Calgary scores on the first shift on Edmonton's new acquisition Mikko Koskinen.

I was watching NJ/Mtl before this. Eddie Lack was in net for New Jersey and stopped all 13 shots he saw threw 40 minutes. Only 13 shots from a Montreal lineup that included new guys Kotkaniemi and Tomas Tatar...as well as Hunter Shinkaruk and Michael Chaput.

Since he's a francophone, Chaput was getting lots of attention on the RDS broadcast.

People are overreacting. Jake is fine. He will be in the top six.

Snipe by Evan Bouchard to tie it up for the Oilers. Nice goal.

1-1. There has also been a fight, and we're barely three minutes into the game.

I did think Jake interviewing Goldy here was a bit awkward, since they are basically competing against each other for a roster spot.

Canucks twitter has the video of Goldobin's goals, too. The second one was off a penalty shot - so he would have drawn the penalty - and the empty-netter was pinpoint from a long way back in the defensive zone.

are they really competing against each other though?

Virtanen getting waived or traded for a 3rd round pick would be a PR nightmare for Benning. I’d argue that his spot is more safe than Gagner’s.

I was thinking of them as two guys who were both taken in the same round of the same draft, as the photo on the right here reminded me when I saw it yesterday:

https://nhlpa.com/the-pa/...ookie-orientation-program

I'm holding off on my roster thoughts until we start to see some game situations. Still way too many variables.

...and I went to Hockey DB to double-check the 2014 draft, who is the No. 1 trending player?

Michael Chaput.

His feed to Victor Mete has sparked a third-period comeback for the Habs. They're now up 3-1 with six minutes left against the Devils.

Good news for Lack. Bad news for the goalie who replaced him, Mackenzie Blackwood.

For sure, no way Virtanen is waived this year regardless of how fat he may be.

The notion it’s remotely possible is silly.
