We are set at every other position except top pair RHD and the day they signed Tavares, Nylander became expendable. With or without Nylander, the Leafs will score goals. Without a top pair RHD, beating Tampa Bay for the foreseeable future looks unlikely. - Unholy_Goalie

Some other things to consider..
Nylander at 7mil is 8.8% of the cap ..all below these players..as he should be..but he is somewhere just a notch below them

Draisaitl signed at 21 for 11.33% of the cap.
Malkin signed at 21 for 15.34%
Kopitar signed at 21 for 11.99%
Stamkos signed at 21 for 11.66%
Stastny signed at 22 for 11.64%
Kane signed at 21 for 11.09%
Toews signed at 21 for 11.09%
Eberle signed at 22 for 10%
The problem here is, Draisaitl is a closer comparable to Nylander across his first 3 years. Nylander has 48 Gs and 135 pts across his first 185 gp (0.26 and 0.73 pts/gp). Draisaitl had 50 Gs and 137 pts in 191 gp (0.26 and 0.72 pts/gp). Draisaitl got 11.33% of the cap.

Well, Draistl is just because of the Chiarelli effect. That contract should just be thrown any as an outlier for all contract negotiations. Nylander should be 6-6.6 for 6-7 years. If he wants sweeten it with a lockout proof signing bonus. |

But why does he deserve that much money? He has played 2 seasons? He had 20 goals last season playing with Matthews. 20. If he wants a long term deal, then he needs to take a lower number. The way the cap system is supposed to work (in theory) is players coming out of entry level deals aren't supposed to get huge paydays. Go for money when you are a UFA.
The thing with Willie is he goes long stretches where he looks disinterested... If he gets over 6 million per I will be disappointed. Might as well have kept JVR and traded Willie for a defensemen! - Hockey_Reverend

also a good point, the Leafs can add value in the form of guaranteed money with SB and such.

Just prepare for him to miss a lot of the season. I doubt Dubas caves for what they want... |

Ya but Draisaitl's playoff run played a big part in his new contract, he was easily their best player.
Nylander hasn't come close to his production in the postseason, so he shouldn't get a pay raise like Draisaitl.
If the Leafs sign Willy at 7 million at the most I'm more than okay with that, anything more is an over payment.

Sabres have a pretty good young core. Oilers I can see cause of the McDavid factor. Mcdavid/Draisaitl is the best U23 combo. |

if your team is not ranked in the top 5, he hates your team and you are required to take it personally. Those are the rules

to be fair though, if you pair an empty can of Pepsi with McDavid, it would still be the best under-23 combo. |
