Yea, they added a new player but how does that change Simmonds ability?
- MJL

JvR is being paid like a guy who's playing on PP1 and does the same role as Simmonds do the math.

Does that mean you can't make a change and still be productive?

I feel like people are more worried about Simmonds then the team.

I don't care who is the net front guy as long as they produce.

And yes things have changed. Prior to this year they didn't have van Riemsdyk. So there is a new variable that needs to be added as we aren't sure exactly who will be used i the net front role.

- J35Bacher

It does kind of feel that way that people are more worried about Simmonds and not the team. Whether it is conscious or subconscious, people seem to want Simmonds to succeed for higher trade value. To be honest his value would be much higher if he actually performs better off the 1st PP unit and in a top 9 role.

I'm not worried about his trade or contract value. I'm thinking they new shiny returning toy is going to get PP1 time and Simmonds will get PP2 time which could actually improve unit 2 and make it a more balanced team which would be better for the overall team in the end.

If you notice, I haven't once knocked JVR's ability. The question is why is he better than Simmonds is? I don't believe that he is. He may not be worse either. We have to see what the coaching staff chooses to do.
Is it possible that some see Simmonds as the best choice for the spot and therefore the best decision for the team. I also think it plays into what the best decision for the future is involving Simmonds and his future with the team.

- MJL

If you notice I never knocked Simmonds ability or what he has done for the Flyers. But I don't agree with "unfair". From last year to this year things have changed. They have added a new player, who also plays a similar role to Simmonds on the PP, and is being paid to do it. Simmonds was also hurt last year. i don't know what effect that will have this year.

What I don't agree with is this feeling of unfair and that the Flyers owe it to Simmonds to give him his spot back.

If the PP is better with Simmonds there then he'll be there. If it is more productive with van Riemsdyk there I want him there.

Exactly. Too many people expect you not to lose your position in sports when you get hurt. Guess what it's a results based business and if some produces better or it is decided that a change in your role will benefit the team as a whole then it's going to happen.

Man that was slick by Vorobyev on his goal. Have to wonder if 3C is within reach
- Just5

He was pretty sound defensively as well. Broke up a bunch of plays, nice backchecking.

One thing I see is that with van Riemsdyk and Patrick last year they seem to be able to do more on the PP because those guys just have better puck skills then Simmonds. I think you could see more looks and more rotation with those guys compared to Simmonds. With Simmonds it seems his value in front is best when it's a shooting PP. But it's not like van Riemsdyk can't do that either as was the case last night.

Misha's back checks brought quite a few discussions in my section about how that part of the game has been lacking from a few Flyers in the last few seasons.

I'm fine with that as well. The Flyers PP actually improved last year using Couturier and Patrick as net presence and high slot on PP1. My problem is if Simmonds is only useful if he get PP1 time then I don't really want him on the team. He needs to learn how to be productive outside the PP to get a new contract.

I won't be shocked to see him get a huge role in the PK. He's seemed to do OK there also in the past.

Funny you say that, I was actually thinking the same thing. I would say the skating may be an issue, but can't be any worse than Lehtera.

I think he did less last year due to the injuries.

Might also be able to Konecny. I know there were reports of him being looked at there. Also Aube-Kubel if he makes the roster. They could have choices for the PK after regulars that seem to be Couturier and Laughton.

I am not talking about his skill or talent. I like him and always have.

I am cracking up at people calling him Misha.

- rinaldo

In Russian, Misha is a short form for the Russian male name Mikhail (Michael).

Just like how Russians and Putin call Ovi Sasha. Just their translation of a name.
