It doesn’t feel right when we agree!
Hahahaha - jdfitz77
I’m surprised how low his deal is for, I expected 4.5-5.5 on 1-2 year, but I never once thought he was getting 6 mil. Not yet |

You don’t have to sign free agents. We never should have signed him in the first place. I could care less about the other options in free agency. I’m looking at our situation with him in a vacuum. - TheHank
I think that Okposo should have a bounce back season
25ish goals
Over 50pts
He then becomes tradable again
Especially since (i think J Crag pointed this out) the least 4 years of his deal, he doesn’t make much actual $$$
I don’t think we’d get back a ton
But at least we could probably move him without having to include a major sweetener as incentive for a team to take him |

It’s pretty much exactly what i thought it would be
Except i figured it was more likely to be a 1 year deal,
that way Sam gets his big deal next year instead of waiting 2yrs |

Yeah I figured it might be less after the Morrissey contract. By all means he’s just as an important guy for Winnipeg as Sam is to us |

I don’t mind him on the team for now, we aren’t a contender this year. For us to be in the future I will mind him still being here. I was never really a fan of his or the signing in the first place. |

Murray’s whole tenure as a GM was a (frank)ing blackout. |

Some of the earlier contracts signed this summer made me think it would get over 4mil
But i never saw it getting above 4.5m on a bridge deal
That just wouldn’t have made any sense for the Sabres
Bottom line is...
i think we can all agree this is a good deal
Hopefully we don’t get stuck paying Sam 7.5mil in his next deal
But if that’s what he demands bc his play has been so good...
then i think I’m gonna be pretty happy regardless
I think his next deal will likely be long term
5yrs (or more) for between 5.5m & 6.0m
I’ve been a Sam supporter all along
But he does have a ceiling |

That’s fair
I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as some ppl say he is
But Okposo also isn’t any type of game changing type player either
So it makes sense to move him & put that 6mil towards other uses |

Believe in something, even if it means wasting all your cap space and draft capital.

Like rhino said, buying a guy out is a last-case scenario. If they hold $2.5 in salary, it's a very moveable contract, imo. Even through his early-to-mid 30s, he should be worth $3.5
We'll see what the year brings. Maybe he's lights out and they keep him, or maybe he's a trade candidate with a good season. I'm sure Botterill is thinking about it, as it's the second-largest cap hit on the team currently |

2 years smart. Anything LT would lock us into an unknown. We now have to contend with the likelihood that Dahlin will command an Eichel-esque deal so we need to be very careful with who we lock in long term. |

Isn’t that like saying,
Why would Sam accept a long term deal for 6mil now, when in 2 years he could potentially make 7.5m?
According to Homie (and i think this makes sense)...
Botts was willing to pay 5mil long term
Sam wanted 6mil
Let’s say we did 8yrs x 6mil today
That’s 48mil total
Now let’s say we get stuck paying 7.5mil bc we waited
7.3mil for these 2yrs, + 7.5m x 6yrs (45mil)
That totals 52.3mil
Divide 53.2mil by 8 years
That equals 6.5375mil per season
So we theoretically end up paying just over half a million more per year over the 8 year time span if we get stuck paying him 7.5mil per on his next deal
And if he only makes 7mil per on his next deal, then it’s essentially even either way
And if we end up signing him to a 6mil per deal (which i think is about his ceiling),
then we are actually saving $$$
A bridge deal almost always makes sense
The only way it really ends up hurting you mathematically is when u talk about the highest paid guys in the league
Sam is never gonna get to that point though
Math says...
this bridge deal is excellent - jdfitz77
Bridge deals are a good short term solution to players who may not have proven their worth yet.
In the long term they tend to become a thumb in the eye as now you have to pony up a higher cap hit for a guy or worse arbitration. Things get dicey and many players have been moved prior to or very shortly after their bridge deal expires.

I find the theory that bridge deals are the right move for anyone short of a franchise player very compelling.

Larkin got 6.1 having the same amount of points as Reinhart in 7 less games.
Sam has more goals.
It's a great value deal but you could see where Sam had a case for 6ish. Kid is betting on himself to play well the next 2 years to get a big pay raise. |

Larkin is also a center and has more upside.
Reinhart is defent, but has been a total non-factor when he wasn’t with Eichel or O’Reilly.
It’s a good deal for the Sabres IMO |
