Like rhino said, buying a guy out is a last-case scenario. If they hold $2.5 in salary, it's a very moveable contract, imo. Even through his early-to-mid 30s, he should be worth $3.5
We'll see what the year brings. Maybe he's lights out and they keep him, or maybe he's a trade candidate with a good season. I'm sure Botterill is thinking about it, as it's the second-largest cap hit on the team currently - jcragcrumple
Botts doesnāt seem like a guy thatāll hold salary
I think our best bet,
would be to get Okposoās numbers up this year & hope he stays healthy
Then we should be able to move his contract...
even if we donāt get much of a return |

Tim Murray was the drunkest in terms of drunkness - sbroads24
I served him a couple times
Once he was in with his wife & kid
He hardly spoke (even to them)
Drank wine & smoked about half a pack |

Bridge deals are a good short term solution to players who may not have proven their worth yet.
In the long term they tend to become a thumb in the eye as now you have to pony up a higher cap hit for a guy or worse arbitration. Things get dicey and many players have been moved prior to or very shortly after their bridge deal expires. - dadeadhead
It doesnāt seem like this was very contentious on either side though
We might get stuck with a little bigger Cap hit than if we signed him long term now,
but i can also understand Botts not being ready to take the risk
Maybe heās even still deciding if he wants Sam here as part of the ācoreā too?
Iāve always been a Sam supporter...
but his game doesnāt fit the āteam speedā aspect Botts seems to want either
Itās still gonna take Botts a couple more years till heās able to ice a team thatās 100% (or close) in his āvisionā |

I find the theory that bridge deals are the right move for anyone short of a franchise player very compelling. - Lunaion
Thatās what the math says
Although there are certainly going to be instances u get burned a bit
Itās generally seems to be a good idea to do bridge deals with your good (not great) players |

Even if you get 'burned' you buy out more years of free agency and are less likely to make a huge mistake on the following contract(s). Getting 'burned' is a good problem to have, not something to fear. |

Especially with homegrown players.
Itās worse when you are overpaying for guys in a trade, then overpaying to prevent them from going to UFA.
We will get 5 productive years from Reinhart before even potentially overpaying or getting burned |

Yup, as long as offer sheets don't exist, you never really get burned by bridging. I like Sam, but I'm not even sure his ceiling is All-Star level at this point. JB showed some restraint, and I think it was a great move.

OMG I just saw a black squirrel in the parking lot at the gym (Catalyst, on Main and Wehrle). Never saw one of those here before - saw them in Kitchener once about 10 years ago.
That is all. Carry on. |

Wonder if Sam's agent presented that at the contract table?
Imagine his agent did.
And botts mentioned the first half of the season
Then 7.3 over 2 years seamed fair |

And one could say he was in top 250 for the first half of last season.
If ever there was a player perfectly fit for a 2 year prove-it deal, he is the poster boy for sure.
I am with Boss34 on this one.
Let's hope they have to pay him his $6m or even $7m in two years!
Nothin could be finer, except for maybe Nylander earning his way to be a #1 RW.
Those are great oroblems to have, versus paying $6m x 6 or 7 years and seeing him produce like a $3m or $4m player.
Great job by Botts...he is showing signs of being magical with signings in the mold of Stevie Y!
Congrats to Boss34 for being the only poster to publicly value him in the $3.5 range on a bridge deal.
All I heard and read was he was going to get paid, especially when Wilson got his. |

2 years smart. Anything LT would lock us into an unknown. We now have to contend with the likelihood that Dahlin will command an Eichel-esque deal so we need to be very careful with who we lock in long term. - lulags
If we are paying out top dollars to our 2 best players I would rather 1 of them be your #1 Franchise Center and the 2nd to be your #1 Franchise Defense-men. I don't think it is smart to be paying Top Dollar to your 2 best forwards or 2 best Defenders, one of each is best case scenario in my opinion. |

Ullmark

I was just wondering if anyone knew if we could leave Okposo unprotected in the next expansion draft or does he need to not list Seattle in his 15 Team No-Trade list? Unlike last time, he won't have a full no-movement clause. |

After 3 years, that will be the Sabres with Eichel and Dahlin.
There will be sveral others "getting paid"...or at least I hope so!
I like the Sabres position, like many have said, the pipeline looks to have several players we should see in Blue and Gold over next 2 years...and 3 - 1sts next year will restock that.
They are positioned well, and this season is the Year of the Transition ... will be fun to watch the young guys develop their game.

Sounded like that was the direction for sure.
...and we all have proved time and time again we are better watching from afar than managing the team...no shame in that though |
