Time to write a Garth style blog about Nylander

- TheMussel

On a hot, sweltering Toronto afternoon, I meet up with the Leafs 2014 top pick William Nylander. This was the 2nd time I have met the young budding star and to say I was surprised is putting it mildly. The first time I met Willie was September 2015, a scrawny young kid listed at 170lbs. I doubted he'd tip 165 in a wet suit when I first met him. This time around I was blown away. Maybe it was the heat, or maybe it was just the excitement of seeing this rising young star again at the beginning of his career. He had obviously started to fill out, and the results of all his hard work at the gym were more than evident. I bit my lip and thought to myself "Oh to be 19 again". What was once scrawny was now filled out and buff. Muscles rippled, pecs stood out, the face of the young lad had started to turn into that of a man. He sensed my shock when I saw him and greeted him.

"Wow", I say. "You're not how I remember"
Nylander giggles nervously and replies "Yeah, it's taken a lot of hard work".

I must have stared a moment too long because he seems to get nervous just then and suggests we move on and get the interview under way. I forget he's still a boy even though he's looking more and more like a man. I offer to buy him a smoothie from the Papaya Hut in downtown Toronto but he tells me he's on a strict diet. I grab my smoothie, and we leisurely stroll down Yonge St. and discuss his potential to make the Leafs this season.

Nylander is realistic about his chances this upcoming season and knows he has a tremendous opportunity if he works hard. He tells me it's been his dream since he was a kid to make the NHL and the opportunity presented by the Leafs is one he doesn't want to miss out on.

"We have a young core of players here in Toronto, the youngest in the league, I just hope I can show enough at camp to stick with the big club". Nylander has been penciled into the Leafs lineup by many observers but he knows it won't be that easy. "Last season was tough. I really thought I could stick in the NHL, but I realized later on that I still had a ways to go. I set out to improve myself and my game in hopes of making it this season"

The willingness and the ability to improve are two strong traits in this young man. After a slow start to the NHL season, Nylander picked up the pace to finish with 61 points in only 82 games and was named as a finalist for Handsomest player of the year. He continuted his strong play into the playoffs where he netted an incredible 4 points in only 7 games. These are stats that should get any Leafs fan excited about this young man's potential.

We briefly chat about his Beautiful upbringing and how he is being viewed as a potential role model in the league, a barrier smasher so to speak.
"I don't think about that stuff", replies Nylander, "I'm just me, I try to be the best I can be, if I inspire any other kids that's great, but I don't see myself as anything special in that regard".

I tell him he IS special, and he nervously accepts my compliment.

As we end the interview, I watch him walk away from me, I gaze and think about the future of this young star, this mere boy who is now filling out a man's body. The heat from the afternoon has coated Nylander's shirt in sweat, and I can easily make out the physique under his shirt. I still can't believe how much he's filled out, and I have to finally turn away as I bite my lip again.

I can't see into the future, but I predict great things for Nylander. Leafs fans should prepare themselves for success, with Nylander on a young Leafs team, the future is oh so bright.

Nylander's agent is being a real arse.

Dubas offered to meet at his favourite restaurant - Chuck E. Cheese - and Dubas would give Nylander as many tokens as he wanted for the "grab-a-prize" game.

Nylander's agent counted with proposing a meeting after 9:30 pm - when the streetlights have come on. He knows Dubas can't do that.

It's getting really ugly, folks.

Brilliant strategy.

Nylander waits it out, misses 15 games, signs a bridge deal, and then next time his contract comes up, Marner will be the upper end comparable and they'll look at how he only got 50 something points in 2018-2019.

- TheMussel

Theyll look at his point per game production over the term of the contract and how with him in the line up, the leafs and his linemates are much better.

Because it's about having different players who bring different skills. You can't have 6 of the exact same defender unless they're all Doughty's but the only reason that'd be alright is because Doughty literally does everything. The Leafs do not have a single all around great defender. Not a single one. Every guy on the blueline excels at one thing and sucks at another.

That being said, yes, you need a Borgman in the line-up. You can't be considered a push over team. The Leafs lost Komarov, Martin and Polak. That's over 500 hits they lost that I don't see them replacing. Hitting does still matter. It is still hockey. Does that mean I want a guy who only smashes people? No. But if a guy like Borgman can play, he should because he can do everything else reasonably well but he excels at laying the body.

- Unholy_Goalie

I agree having the ability to check effectively is a great asset. I also agree that if that player has some speed and skill to move the puck is take the guy with some physicality too first. You are right having a bunch of Doughty’s would be ideal; and that in a non-ideal world you have a mix of talents. I just don’t agree with making physicality the most important tool for your 3rd pairing; that way you only get knuckle dragging tools in that pairing. I like a lot of what the Leafs have and the prospects. They are missing that one all round guy. Reilly is very good, an excellent #2; Gardiner is underrated, he is a good 2-3 as well. We don’t have the great #1, so need the by committee thing to happen with very good 3-6. It is coming. Back in the day we had ellet, rouse, lefebre, yuschevich et al and that was quite effective - though they had the advantage of looser holding rules.

Sick, sick burn.

I'd like to respond, but what the hell's the point?

Canucks are to the Leafs like the Partridge Family is to the Brady Bunch.

The game has changed.

Guys no longer want to play the body as much, because sure, you can knock the guy off the puck, but you are now out of position, and you aren't guaranteed possession. The new way is to stick check so that you can immediately seize the puck and go with it.

I'm not saying I like the new way - I like clean but physical play. But it is what it is.

Same thing with the slap shot - it's a dying part of the game. I'm not particularly happy about that development, either.
