I don't think keeping the kid on this team this year is the best thing for his development.

1) He's not used to an 82 game schedule
2) He still needs to put on mass and build strength
3) Him being the best C on a team void of C's, talent or scoring is hardly an appropriate barometer
4) If he's your next best thing....why not invest in that development and send him back for this year and possibly next - you'd get him for 8 years after that too.
5) What if he goes 30 games with no goals on this team? You want him to succeed.....even if he's dominating the Finnish league.....let him do it.
6) Risk of injury?

He'll probably make the team because management is stupid and desperate. He looks good, but i'd make damn sure i put him in the best possible situation to succeed. He's our biggest asset and this poop show should have learned something from rushing Chucky even if they aren't the same type of player......the situation is akin.

So welcome to the 2018-2019 Habs Kotkaniemi!!!

So to paraphrase, he shouldn't be able to earn his way on the team.
I think if there was even the slightest flaw they would have sent him back, but what message do you send to your youth by basically saying it doesn't matter how well you play, you come up when we tell you.

It's about the long term, development and insurance on your greatest asset. What are the benefits of him making the team this year?

Play him 9 games and if he sucks, send him home. Lesser players have been given that treatment.

He gets to grow with the other core players.
He gets to train exactly what they tell him too.
Will get to play and make mistakes against players he will be playing against for years.
Will get even more acclimated to smaller rink.
Is Finland or MTL so easier to keep an eye on him here.

If they send him back, they are basically saying that they don't care to ice the best team possible, which is fine.
Send him to Pori, keep Scherback and Lose for Hughes!

At the end of the day they're making the decisions. I'm just paranoid after years of squandering players that our first real C in 25 years will end up the same. That's all.

i hear you. at the end of the day he'll play himself onto the team if that's what he deserves. going down to the AHL and crushing isn't the best thing sometimes.

He needs to be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. The Habs don't have the greatest track record with that. They get stapled to the bench when they (frank) up. I'd love to watch him this year but management, coaches and his teammates have to set him up for success.
