Ugly last night. Expected more, it was essentially ahl vs ahl. Sparks was a disaster. As dumb as it seems to base off one game I think that about does it for sparks.

Leafs missed the boat. Tavares and Laine would be dynamite together.

I mean they'd be one centre short, but should have picked Laine.

- BetterCallSaul

Just saw this. Laine is a fantastic player, no doubt. I would rather have Matthews.

I had a moron Habs fan at work bragging about the game last night.....typical Habs fan, grasping at anything that will give him any hope.

I told him reality will set back in on October 3 when the big boys play for keeps.

(frank) that.

He's young.

He's improved greatly over the past year.

He's smart.

He's fast.

He can lay a mfk'r out.

Holl should cash out and live a good life outside of hockey and stop rearing his ugly head into our conversations.

- Arctic_AARDVARK

I've been more impressed with Holl than Borgman this camp.

So get somebody who isn't old, doesn't suck and is trusted by Babcock to play 25+ games.
- Unholy_Goalie

Mcbackup doesnt suck. Youve even said he had a career year last year and he was decent the year before.
Babs likes to play his starters alot. Doesnt matter.

Either way, it's bad judgement or bad decision making. Andersen clearly could not handle facing that many shots as his play declined at the end of the year. It's just a bad idea to over work your starter like that. If he doesn't trust McElhinney, get another back-up he can trust. Simple.

Get one he can trust if that's the problem. Sparks isn't the guy. Maybe Pickard is. McElhinney playing his mind out last year wasn't enough to get more than 18 games. Find somebody who can.

If it's Babcock, he's being stupid. That's where the GM steps in and says, here's a better back-up, go play him because the starter is getting overworked. It must be he doesn't trust him because if he did, he had the numbers to play more games and yet he didn't.

It definitely is a factor that the defense and the team in general gives up too many shots but what's easier to acquire; a top pairing RHD, another top four defensive defender and capable bottom pairing defenders OR a back-up goalie?

The problem of giving up too many shots and chances definitely needs to be fixed but until that issue is fixed, it's a lot easier just to get a better back-up and play him 25-30 times so Andersen doesn't get run into the ground by the end of the year.

- Unholy_Goalie

What dont you get?
No matter who the back up is, babs will still play andersen alot.

So if you’re a habs fan don’t go to the preseason game at home against the leafs next year because rosters will equally suck.

After every signing Nylander's position gets weaker. I just dont understand what they are thinking on his end. Its pretty obvious his pay range should be 6-6.75. Should be an easy contract with all the comparables.

Yup, the highest he will get is 7 million, which I'd be okay with but it should be a little less than that.

If he was being honest with himself, he'd be getting 6.25M just above Ehlers who is IMO his closest comparison.

My guess that this isn't about the salary itself but moreso on how it's weighted year to year with the CBA set to expire in the next couple of years.

I personally think this is all salary itself. I think because of his father he overvalues what he should be getting.

If this was simply structure it would be done. The Leafs dont have to worry too much about the structure, even if there is a lockout they have enough money to not care. IMO

Way too much money for him. He got 7 years and 5.2 per.. Crazy money for a guy that has spent time in the AHL, each of the last 2 years.

Considering the guy is already seen as their best defenseman and should most likely improve in every way in the next few years.... they might end up with a real bargain here if you ask me.

It's a risk worth taking.

Holl had a giveaway which led to the first goal last night

Also saw him caught up the ice a few times over the preseason

I like Borgman..... good hitter

He only got 5.2M, and was one of their best defensemen as they made it to the cup finals. Kinda gives you perspective on what Nylander should get IMO, which is no where close to what he is asking.

wasn't he only in the AHL last year as part of a numbers game? anyway if he proves to only be nothing more than a quality second pairing dman, that's still a fair contract.

Does anyone know what his production was like without matthews? Better, worse, or on par?
