5 Keys to a successful Flyers season
1. Health: the key core players, namely Couturier, Provorov, Ghost and Giroux must stay healthy for this team to succeed. What they do in this lineup is basically irreplaceable.
2. Goaltending: The Flyers don't need world class goaltending to be successful as they should have no problem scoring their share of goals. However, they do at least need to get league average goaltending over the course of the season if they expect to return to the playoffs and especially if they expect to have any chance of winning a round.
3. Penalty killing: much like goaltending, the PK has to at least move to the middle of the pack if this team is going to do any damage in the playoffs.
4. Continued development/improvement among the 1st and 2nd year players: A lot will be needed and expected from guys like Sanheim, Patrick, Lindblom and Vorobyev if this team is to improve this season. Patrick is the key among this group. With a rookie at 3C and a journeyman at 4C, it is absolutely critical for him to take the next step and become, at the very least, a solid 2C this season for this team to have any success in 18-19.
5. The Powerplay: The Flyers, for the first time in a long time, should be able to ice a lethal top unit and a very good 2nd pp unit. Their powerplay needs to be, and should be, top 5 in the NHL and it will need to win them some games this season. They should be solid at ES, and the PK is still a question mark, but the powerplay should be this teams bread and butter.

Didn't see Weise as a healthy scratch. Is he technically sent to Phantoms (on paper)? |

On April 22nd, i couldn't wait for the draft, but it seemed to be ages away. After the draft, Free Agency was close, but still far off. Free Agency calmed and Camp was too far away to think about. All of the little bridges are now a distant memory and the season is here! Cheers to an 18-19 full of Flyers hockey! |

No because Pickard has a visa issue he has to work out and is non-roster until then |

Life is good again.
Congrats to all of the hardcore Flyers fans who suffered the dog days of summer,
and especially to Bill, for keeping us "fixed" with Flyers info.
My onlly real hope is this team just plays hard for 60 min game in game out nothing more nothing less. |

all true, and I will also add Coaching. I like Hakstol. But as he has admitted there are things he needs to improve on for both himself and the staff.

I really think if Elliot can stay healthy and just perform to his career numbers everything else will fall inline for them... |

Got it. No need to make move until Pickard gets cleared and joins team. It will be interesting to see if they send Weise down or waive Stolie as he needs to clear waivers before joining Phantoms (correct?).

Would certainly help, but at most, you really don't want Elliott starting more than 50 games. Someone, be it Pickard, Neuvirth, Lyon etc., will have to step up and give them at least solid goaltending in the other 32 or so games.

Yup, Stolie has to clear waivers, but with Lyon and Neuvirth both unavailable, I think that is what they do. With rosters set and the season started, unless a team loses a goalie to a injury tonight, I doubt very much that he gets claimed.
The real tragedy is that then we are still stuck with the steaming pile of rancid monkey crap that calls itself Dale Weise on our roster.

I think it is almost completely guaranteed they waive Stolarz, but depending on the timing of it all they could "send down" Weise on paper for day. Weise is here to stay at least until they would need 8 defensemen |

This is long down the list of things I would criticize Hak for because I think most coaches would do keep the team's overall #1 dman there, but Sanheim is a better PP QB than Provorov. |

On the penalty killing front, the Flyers have a clear need to improve significantly upon last year's 29th-ranked 75.8 percent (169-for-223) performance. The Flyers also scored just three shorthanded goals last season. Only the Arizona Coyotes (two) had fewer than the three apiece scored by Philadelphia and the New York Islanders.
To be positive, it's almost impossible for the PK to get worse. |

I don't think he's going to hurt the team too much from the press box. Lehtera as an everyday player and PK regular is a much bigger concern. Every PK he goes out for is closer to a 5 on 3 than a 5 on 4 for the opposition due to his extreme slowness. |
