Damn I didn't think the Marchand fight would be this controversial. If any Flyer did this after being down 7-0 no one would say boo.
Just another fight. Nothing more, nothing less. - Pelle31Forever
There's a difference between fighting someone and jumping an unsuspecting player and throwing punches before he even knows he's in a fight. The latter is just a beotch move but I mean it is Marchand we're talking about so can't expect anything less. |

I can't stand Marchand but of all the crappy things he's done I think this is as close to being both crappy and not suspendable.
Initially I thought "WHOA" when I heard 20 games for Wilson but then I saw how tight his suspension history is. I actually think his hit in the playoffs was far worse then this one and deserved so much more then he got but I definitely had to reconsider my first reaction. Still surprised it was 20 rather than 12/15 but he really isn't getting it. - mayorofangrytown
He paid 1.2 million dollars to hit a guy who was barely on the roster in a game that meant nothing. He thinks it is okay to hit guys in the head. That needs to change. |

Basically, as far as I'm concerned, Marchand violated a written and unwritten rule by punching a guy who didn't want to fight because the guy violated an unwritten rule that Marchand, himself, violates all the (frank)ing time.

Why would/should he be suspended? To me he just whooped his as$ for taunting the bench after he scored. - Pelle31Forever
No argument here....was just starting a discussion. I’m fine with what he did....bad optics for everyone outside the only spot that matters....the Bruins dressing room. I’m sure, like Bill suggested above, the teammates are totally behind Marchands actions.

It is ironic....a guy that breaks written and unwritten rules all the time is now on the proper side...

And Emery went out the next night, shut out the Devils, and the Flyers season started to turn around very shortly thereafter. Right or wrong, the guys in the room LOVED what he did, even if many outside it were condemning it. It let out a lot of frustration and brought the team closer together.
Not saying it was the right thing for Emery to do, but it had an internally positive effect. - bmeltzer
That’s the rub....Marchand did something that every guy in that room would get behind. That’s a guy that their dressing room will follow. I know the game has changed, it’s passing some us by...me...but what Eller did was really stupid, and I would guess he wont show that level of disrespect against an opponent ever again.

Why should Wilson have gotten it?
The league has been soft on him in the past and Washington just gave him a fat contract?
What incentive has he had to be better? - johndewar
What am I missing?
Thinking we agree. Maybe a reread is in order. |

Absolutely. 1.2 should change his mind I'd think. |

I also think that in the hierarchy of unwritten rules, no celebrating a blowout scoreline is much lower than punching an another unsuspecting player. - VladDrag

We do.
I was making the point that Wilson has had no incentive to play a different way because he has been enabled to this point. Wilson has had no reason to "get it" with his headhunting. |

The assumption is....EVERY guy in the room would get behind. The reality is not every one is and some that go along with it feel obligated to do so.
It's no different than dealing with the obligation to family because "blood is thicker..." than blah blah. There will always be someone out there with a moral compass who will choose right over obligations. |

Neither does Marchand, the NHL made a clear statement...you do what you do, but when our hand is forced then we will tell you no then invite you to the all-star game.
Now if that wasn't Marchand last night...much different story for the other player. |
