From the Elliotte Freidman piece from a few days ago-

I doubt Matthews would sign an offer sheet.

I didn’t see that piece, good stuff

IIRC, $8 million would make him the 22nd or 25th highest paid player in the league.

I'm going to need .HoHo.'s hat to fully demonstrate what I think of that.

Hopefully to shyte in.

Analogies to other industries don't really work, because other industries don't operate under a salary cap.

As a general rule, anything that any player says in an interview does not actually mean shyte.

What the hell did you expect him to say - he's open to playing somewhere else for more money?

Matthews may want to play in Toronto. He may not. But silly interviews he gives to reporters mean jack-poop.

So... the following legitimately just made me spit out my coffee onto my notebook...

- markmark

And I caught one of the t shirts at the Leaf game.

Exactly.

When things aren't going well Mgmt has zero loyalty to the players. It's all about money.
Who's to say if Nylander takes less than what market value is, that a year from now they don't trade him to Arizona or Carolina for a D. Then he's stuck in a dead market making less than he deserves.

It's a really good piece. If you care at all, give the whole thing a go.

Who is stay his holding out doesnt get him traded to Arizona tomorrow? Good luck putting up big numbers leaving Matthews and playing with Galchenyuk. Good luck trying to win a cup.

Oh...I agree.
But that number is coming from Dreger....I seriously doubt that the Leafs or Nylanders agent are negotiating this in the media.

Also everytime Dreger says this he prefaces it with "Speculation is..."

So give him a contract: 8 years X $7 million, and include a no movement clause.

BOOM!

Wedgie saves the day!

It's still not "big points". Jaden Schwartz has similar numbers at the same age, he makes 5.35 million per year. Not sure what his percentage was against the cap when he signed that deal but seems fair to me?

Just my opinion but I think Nylander is out to lunch on his ask.

While I agree he could get traded tomorrow...at least he'll get his money.

Much better than taking less than market value and then getting traded.

TBH...I think he's traded regardless.

Either way, he must be asking for way more than hes worth for it to get to this point.

Leafs need him, but they need a top 4 defenseman. So it wouldn't be a surprise if he was traded.

he'll get his money and hurt his career long term. long term hes better off competing for a cup and racking up points beside Matthews to set up his 3rd contract.

lol...well if that was the offer I think it would've been signed months ago.

He should be looking at Ehlers money...very similar stats.
Add a little for inflation and increase in salary cap...6.5 - 6.75 per.

What would he get if he could sign elsewhere? Probably close to 8.
Its not about "deserve" it is about market value.

The RFA market was set by McDavid and Eichel, the rest of the RFA's based on their skill set slot in after that. For recent RFA's its not unreasonable to think he should get 7.5 to 8 based on his talent
