Why would they most likely trade a top 3 pick for Nylander?
- Scabeh
I dunno why did Ottawa trade their pick last year?
Sometimes GM's see a deal they like and do it..
Note the word "try" did not say Colorado would do it.
That said Nylander playing with Landeskog, and MacKinnon would be pretty fun to watch. |

that would be a good spot to land.
what are the Leafs offering is what id like to know - senstroll
The roooomers, and I think it was TSN, said Dubas is offering $6m, and not coming up, and Nylander's camp wants $8m+ and are not coming down.
If you're the Leafs you don't move until they do, and you don't come over $6.75. Make Nylander come to you. Again, as I think you've pointed out - he has no leverage here. So it should be a good faith negotiation based on true Market value (not outliers like Draisaitl, McDavid, or Eichel). |

ok get mad and call him names, up to you - senstroll
Have not done either.
Just made it clear that if this is what he wants, then I would prefer they trade him.
Also made it clear that him, and Marner Matthews, Gardiner, Kapanen are all going to have to make a decision about where their priorities are. That is just the reality of the cap.

People forget that William has to pay for Alex being a bust. Hence the need for more money. He's a family man. |

Even if you concede that other industries do operate within a confined and relatively strict budget, the analogy fails because you don't typically pay employees based on potential. I'll pay you $150k because you look like the type who could win a Pulitzer!
They also don't purchase future years of employment.
The point is that in other industries you need to earn it, and prove it consistently. In the sports world, these days, you do it once, and you've seemingly earned the right to expect to be overpaid. - Monkeypunk
And if I don't like the salary I get with company X, there's nothing stopping me from quitting and going to company Y for more money.
For this and a million other reasons, comparing the NHL to the real world doesn't work. |

I doubt any which way a deal is made it won't matter....Leafs and Williy have each dug themselves a hole....Leafs will come out of it but Willy will not as we will not become the star he would be with the Leafsā¦.I think he will definitely be traded unless he does something real quick...the longer he wits the more bitter the Leafs will get and then not want him as part of their plan.....nothing wrong with asking the star palyers to take a little less to become part of something big as I am sure Shanahan and Dudas are trying not only to go for the cup but also to build a dynasty which is so hard to do these days with cap.....I really like Willy but if he doesn't come to terms soon then that shows he cares more for a few extra mil rather than committing to the big plan......maybe I am wrong but that's how I feel....do you want a bit of extra cash or do want to be part of something huge and a possible dynasty....come on Willy you will still make enough cash in your career do you the rest of your life no doubt about that.....GO WILLY GO....sign sign sign ! |

Most guys in Nylanders class sign for 7 to 9 million per season. Look on every roster in the NHL. the 3rd or 4th best players on a roster are making at least 7.
In Canada and places like California you need to look at the higher end of that number if simply to offset tax penalties.
From a business and agents perspective you have to consider what other RFA's have signed for in other teams, regardless of reasons for it, fact is they set the market.
Matthews is gonna ask for 12 next year because of what Eichel and McDavid got and not base is on the fact he might only be the 2nd best player behind JT who is making 11 and therefore he should take 10
Probably gets resolved by the end of the month if not sooner, either a deal gets done or they trade him. Maybe see if Colorado will give you the Ottawa pick for him? How sick would the offense be if you added Hughes.
- fsanford
You are confusing RFAs with UFAs.
There are currently 23 NHL players with a cap hit of $8 million or greater.
Only 3 got their deals as RFAs:
Connor McDavid (see my post above)
Jack Eichel (see my post above)
Leon Draisatl (huge franking mistake). |

There are only 45 players in the NHL with a cap hit of $7 million or greater, so your mathing doesn't work. |

That is the funny part, most people agree that the Draisaitl deal was ridiculous and it was sigend by one of the most stupid GMs any of us have seen.
but yeah, Leafs will have to pay close to that for Nylander |

Willy is not worth more than 6.75 mil yet...only had two half decent seasons and that's playing with Matthews....he should come down to earth and buy into the Leaf dynasty plan.....if it works he will be much happier for it down the road when he retires and if not better go bridge even though it won't matter unless he signs real soon as he will be traded if he doesn't sign real soon....leaving a bad taste |

he'll get his money and hurt his career long term. long term hes better off competing for a cup and racking up points beside Matthews to set up his 3rd contract. - systemtool
