All true, but the same was said about Burke's and Nonis' tenure. Both left the pool empty.
The last three canuck GMs were going for it. They had the right idea as the canucks were close. But none of them could get the job done.
Oh well, let's see if Benning is any better... - bloatedmosquito
He’s had 5 off-seasons here, at what point is it okay to start passing judgement?
Gillis had 6 off-seasons as Canucks GM. |

Burke and Nonis brought in Sedins Edler Bieksa Kesler Hansen Burrows (not drafted)
Gillis Bo Shink Gaunce Hodgson

Calgary traded a first round pick (13th overall) to a division rival after playing just 66 games in the NHL for a second round pick. That rarely happens. That shows you how confident the Flames were that his career impact would be minimal.
I don't use poor contract management by NHL GMs as my benchmark to evaluate cost vs benefit. - bloatedmosquito
So what does a player who scores at a .5 ppg cost in your mind? The benchmark used to be 100,000 K per point but with inflation it's probably closer to 115,000.
You want players that have proven nothing in the NHL and then hope they provide enough to win you a cup? |

Well, if it takes you 50+ years to win a championship then a 10 year rebuild is just a drop in the bucket. |

When Bo's line start scoring then they will be better than expected

hope Bo's line starts scoring before the inevitable injuries that take out half the top 6 D...

Cost per point seems like the kind of thinking that ends up with your team signing more Gagner’s and Vanek’s that no one else wants. |

I didn't think this conversation was about winning a cup, I thought it was about Baer's ability and relevance.
I said he sucked and a player like him can be replaced easily at a much cheaper cost. Your email proved that by showing similar 3rd line roles at a fraction of the cost. |

Bo will be the 3LC that wins Van's championships.
Dahlen Pettersson _______
______ Hughes Boeser
Baertschi Horvat Virtanen
______Beagle MacEwen
Hughes _____
Juolevi Woo

If that was the case then I would start looking at Gaudette on the wing. I don't think he will ever be better then Horvat. - manvanfan
Champion teams don't have 3m fourth line centers.

Who is giving Benning a free pass? I see most people saying Gillis screwed up and so did Benning. I don't see anyone saying it's not Bennings fault .I think most are saying Benning is an idiot and Gillis screwed us.

How is he replaced? None of those players scored at the same rate as Baertschi last season. Even him missing 20 some odd games. |

Obviously it would be subjective to can they play in the NHL. |

Hey, if we want to make Gillis the scapegoat then that's fine with me.
My personal opinion, every management regime the canucks have had sucks. Can't get the job done. Arguing about which one was better is like arguing about which pile of poop smells better. |

I can see Brock slumping this year. He will figure it out . Nothing to make an issue of. He might need time in Utica to find his game again. - VANTEL
Can't see Brock going to Utica after a 29 goal season in the NHL...they'll work it out up here. Not too worried. |

Gillis brought us one game from winning the cup, if they won it then he’d be a hero here forever.
I don’t believe 1 game should make the difference between “hero” and “he screwed us”.
He took his shot and came close, unfortunately the ammo he used was trading draft picks + not having a great draft strategy to begin with. He was hired to win a cup here and came very close.
I’d still classify his tenure here into 2 parts, I thought he was very good up until the SJ sweep series season. That’s when I started to dislike him.
I don’t think Benning is an idiot, I just think he’s in a role that’s too big for him. I wouldn’t be against keeping him around in a lesser role if he could swallow his pride and accept it. |

It is not meant as a punishment . Send him down on a conditioning stint just to get his confidence. It is done all the time to injured players. |

I agree but both are players that good teams took a pass on. No one wants Gagner now.
Jackets took Vanek for a guy that wouldn’t make their team this year. And now he’s signed with another bottom feeder this summer. |

Vanek looks best on bad teams these days. the desperate fans of those teams ignore how slow and bad defensively he is because they’re so desperate for offense lol.
Doesn’t seem like contending teams want anything to do with him. |

There's a reason teams like Calgary throw in the towel on players like Baer and Granlund. They top out at 3rd line potential. Only reason Baer would be considered top 6 is because our roster really kinda stinks lol. |
