As a huge fan of video games, i'll offer you a different point of view.
Fortnite isn't different than numerous other online games that existed before.
It might simply be more accessible (being free and on every single gaming platform that exists) and is simple enough to play that everyone can enjoy it. (Altough winning an actual game is pretty hard).
Kids are addicted to it because a game can last from 5 min to 35 min so they can always do "just one more". If parents took the time to sit with their kids, understand the game they are playing, why they love it and, hell, play with them.. it wouldn't be seen as such a negative activity.
Of course, as with everything else, it should be done with moderation.

I have a Ps4 but I don't think I've openned it in the last 6 months.
