A lot of the things he did were pretty innovative, sleep doctors and all that. It’s the kind of thing that you can pursue to gain a slight competitive edge in a league with a salary cap if your owners are willing to spend the money.

He got made fun of for that, but you’re right, there’s no salary cap on coaches and resources to help players and those teams willing to push the envelope could have an advantage.

Listening to the MG interview now

Is it weird that I'm more excited to to listen to this than I was for the game yesterday?

Even if the effects are negligible, and I’m not just referring to sleep doctors, you’d be foolish not to pursue every possible avenue for incremental improvement. Say what you will about ownership, but they are willing to spend money, so take advantage of that.

Hey - I posted a question about the roster moves allowed for the year in the pool, did you see it?

I know Gillis inherited a good core but he was fired after five years of having tremendous success, I find it hard to believe the Aquilini group will keep Benning around much longer with the continued poor finishes after five or six years. Despite the collection of three great young players.

He basically said that he doesn't watch or really follow the Canucks because he thinks they're boring

Also, reading between the lines I believe that he wanted to rebuild at the 2014 TDL and beyond but Aquilini wanted none of that.

When questioned about his NTC's, he mentioned Vantel's "threaten to send them to the AHL if they don't waive" strategy lol

Is that a reference to The Fugitive, or does hinkie mean something else to you kids?

You can’t ignore the fact that by the end of his time the Canucks were a circus. Two first round exits where they got crushed, the Luongo contract and ridiculous trade saga, Kesler and Torts and I’m probably forgetting something. I had zero problems with him getting fired.

But based on the quotes Vantel posted, it sounds like he was beginning to tell ownership things that they didn’t want to hear. I get the impression that a Benning doesn’t do that. Maybe it gives him some extra rope.

Edit:

Hodgsen and Kassian and the biggest trade in NHL history that turned into absolutely nothing for both teams.

True....things got away from him. I'm of the opinion things have gotten away from Benning as well, just in a different manner. A lot of missteps and if Boeser struggles this year, then in five years you've basically got Pettersson and the hope that Hughes is going to an impact player. Is that enough to keep his job after all wasted money and poor trades after five years?

I like Leiwke, I follow the Toronto Raptors closely and he played a big part in turning that franchise around from being a laughing stock of sorts to a team that's respected.

Or maybe Hank, he was pretty good, even way back then. Or was he too young...
