When you got cut on any of your many times down to the minors were you called into the president or GMs office or did you hear it from the coach.
He was not fired he was demoted . He is still employed by the Canucks group. - VANTEL
Both, first the coach would tell me and then the GM would tell me why and where I was going.
Again, this isn't about Gagner's hurt feelings, who gives (frank), he's poop, it's about Benning being a professional.
And keep in mind Gagner called Travis, Travis didn't call Gagner. Anyways it's not really a big deal I just saw it on twitter. |

He was fired, you can spin it however you want, he deserved it, that's not what my comment was about, it's about professionalism within the organization and how it's perceived by future UFA's. - LeftCoaster
he gets paid, by the organization, to play hockey, within the organization. How was he fired? |

They just sent down 30 players . I don't see them all having to get a response from Jim sorry.
Gagner should know why he was sent down. Should Jim have to sit down with MDZ next and tell him he is number 7 at this moment or does MDZ have to man up and know he needs to play better.
Again way to much made of nothing. I am not a Benning fan but it is ridiculous seeing so much made out of nothing. The guy played for one year only. |

Lefty is drunk . If he plays very well in the AHL Canucks can call him up and not need to sign another contract. He was demoted not fired. |

lol. c'mon codes. you guys are arguing semantics now.
he was fired or demoted. it's a distinction without difference.
he wanted to talk to the guy who hired him as to the reasons why. i can understand that. i can also understand why the team wouldn't care.
however, if you think that he doesn't require a conversation with the gm, so be it. but that means that no player deserves a talk with anyone (green didn't phone him back).
next time a prospect gets waived without a talk/explanation, it doesn't matter. the move is the message. he doesn't deserve more!
this is just more evidence of the clown show in vancouver's management. if i were to guess, i would say that they all thought the other guy would phone gagner to tell him. just more of the mixed messages, incoherent management. |

I get your point, but personally, as a professional organization, he needs to be contacted by the GM and coach.
Why would any UFA sign in Vancouver knowing that they wont be treated professionally and with respect? It's toxic and wreaks of dysfunctional. |

Elias Pettersson is tied for second in @Canucks history for the most points through his first four career games:

Curt Fraser (1978-79) 4-3—7 in 4 GP
Stan Smyl (1978-79) 1-6—7 in 4 GP

I bet you could do that with any player playing with EP

its not really semantics, its just the truth. He is still getting paid the same wage to play hockey within the organization, he wasn't fired, he was demoted, and with good cause. I am not a Benning supporter, but I refuse to harp on him, for not calling Gagner after he was waived and he is crying to the media about a phone call. He had no waiver claims, and was sent to the AHL, the non-pickup kind of speaks for itself imo, and answers any question that gagner may have had.

Gagner said he reached out to both Benning and Green and didn't hear back from either. You want to talk about being a beta... that just reeks of someone being scared of conflict.
EDIT: Sorry, it sounds like he talked to Travis, but never heard back from Benning...point still stands - nucks_94
No it doesn't, I have yet to have anyone above my direct Superintendent inform me of my responsibilities. That is the same in every organization, would it have been a decent thing to call....maybe, but Gagner reports to Green.
I guess the minister of Fisheries and Oceans should be keeping me in the loop of my project status,

honestly, even if this Gagner thing does taint the organizations image to future UFA's, this would probably be the biggest blessing in disguise then lol |

actually, what we are saying is that the professional courtesy (by most organizations) is that management phones the player BEFORE waivers to tell him and explain why.
this is especially true of veterans who were only signed 1 year previously.
no one is saying that the move is unjustified (i think you can remember the "discussions" around that). what i, and others, believe is that the situation could have been handled more professionally. in my view, this is symptomatic of a badly run organization. in itself, it isn't bad but it's a pattern of bad PR moves. those things add up to diminish the view of the team.
also, this idea that anyone who talks to the media is crying is laughable. he was contacted by a reporter and answered his questions biassed in his favour. there was no crying. he was answering questions about what happened.

why do people compare themselves with professional athletes? it's freaking hilarious.
these are 800 out of billions who can play at this level.
they are not like a freaking union worker. they don't fill out an application and talk to HR before being hired. so stop trying to think that the situations are the same.
in professions, you meet with the senior people (for an interview/dinner/socializing) before being hired.) when you leave, senior people meet with you. |

I have never been part of a professional athletes firing , trade , or demotion so I don't have first hand account and I don't think anyone here has .
I have seen a few movies like Money Ball , Major League and a few others and it always comes down to the coach giving the bad news. I have no idea if it is realistic or not . We all assume it would be the GM but none of us know for sure.
I seriously doubt Jim called 30 players into his office like Gaunce and Boucher and gave them the news. I would think it was the coach. |

I will agree to disagree. I don't think this whole thing is a big deal, and I think Gagner knew what he was saying when he was asked how he found out. This isn't his first rodeo with the media, especially in a Canadian market. Either way, I just think this whole thing is made to be way way way bigger than it actually is. |

people were comparing Gagner's situation to a real-world job situation, about getting "fired" or "demoted", and how management, supervisors, and what not what be delivering the news. That is why Makita brought up the above. |

it's not a huge deal. just like it would have been the decent thing to phone a veteran player that you signed for 3 years and nearly $10m dollars to tell him that you're waiving him.
not a huge deal. just a small matter that gives a glimpse as to how things are being run/managed. |

the fact that you would say that it was being compared to a "real-world job situation," says it all.
this is professional sports. this is so outside of normal.
if you want to compare it to the real world, let me ask you this, do you think that one of the top 10ish paid workers in a billion dollar organization would have been told by someone pretty high up? |
