That play wasn't really dirty. Maybe two minutes for holding... Maybe - Njuice
I agree with this. That's absolutely a minor for holding, but I don't think it's anything more than that; not in the current NHL. His head never hits the ice until the second bounce (the first impact was clearly shoulder-first), and it's not a slewfoot; their legs never touched. He obviously wasn't trying to hurt him, so it's not a straight match. What else is there left to call?
I guess he might get fined, but even that'd be a stretch. He should probably tape his knuckles on January 13, though. He's probably going to be using them a few times, whether he cares to or not. |

Crushing your unsuspecting opponent is totally reckless and dangerous, when just shoving them off the puck accomplishes the same thing. Respect!!! |

Who can't take him serious captain grammar ? You ? Your sentence lacks an "I". It should read: "I can't take you serious" not simply "can't take you serious". Go crawl back under a rock. |

I'm from Newfoundland. Considering you only found 2 things to call me out on from about 10 posts means I could probably teach English at a university level back home. |

The Canucks torched Matheson for the winning goal like 1 minute later. A real punishment would be the league forcing this plug to play like 30 minutes a night so he can get embarrassed by the best players more often. |

I feel like I've seen fairly similar board play to this many times. The main difference here is the injury that resulted. Didn't look intentional to be honest; just rough hard play that ended up hurting someone (unfortunately). |

I like a good clean hit. A solid body check or hip check delivered in a clean measured manner.
Spearing, head-hunting, slew-footing, hand slashes, and other play intended to injure should be punished harshly. There should be no repeat offenders. Guys like Wilson and Marchand should be banned for life before they cripple or kill somebody.

Ya that was a rough ride to give to a rookie, but that play happens several times a year. The only things I can see wrong with it is lack of restraint shown against hitting a rookie and the utter lack or response by the Canuck players. Even after the play was shown they did nothing about it.
Canuck players and fans should be upset at themselves and the team for not sticking up for a teammate especially a rookie, why the hell is everyone else all bent out of shape over it I have no idea?
This isn't ringette guys! |

Now i get why they banned video games on the road.. There's some serious team bonding issues here.. Their stud rookie gets roughed up by some schlub and the vets do nothing.
The Nucks are a joke. |

What's sadder is the fact that no one on Vancouver did anything about it...oh, where oh where are the enforcers? |

Hockey is a contact sport - so hitting is ok. A fourth line plug head hunting one of the better players on the opposition is bullsh!t. Last time I bought tickets to a game, I'm pretty sure I wasn't paying money to see Matheson play or players of his caliber.

I beleive the Matheson hit on Pettersson was clearly premeditated and Preditory. Remember Matheson was exacting revenge for being to blame on Pettersson's first goal of the game being dangled hard and subsecquent other plays being dominated and made to look silly including just before the incident in question. Matheson was seemingly assigned to shadow Pettersson with little affect, he was embarrassed and had malicious intent. The hit is one thing, but when the vulnerable player is already falling to the ice you grab and throw downward with your weight and arms violently to make the impact more violent and inflict damage. I beleive it's blantent intent to injure. Roughing should of been called in the the heat of action but upon further review there is malicious intent. Of course no call was made as the ref was 5 feet away looking right at the player laying on the ice with a concussion from head impact. It was fitting that Bo Horvat schooled Matheson shortly there after with the game winner. |

What i will agree with is that he didn't have to do that.. It wasn't that bad, but clearly unsportsmanlike. Some tough guys will go out of their way to make sure they don't injure star players or rookies. They play with more integrity. Matt Martin was like this. |

These comments are hilarious. Talking about long suspensions and sending a message. That was a 2 for roughing if anything. It was a normal every day hockey play. Only difference was Pettersen is like 160lbs soaken wet and got manhandled. That's not a knock on pettersen just a reality. He'll fill out but what are people supposed to go easy on him because he's small? That being said I do hope the kid is okay. I don't wish injury on anyone. - HealthyScratch6
Well, they do penalize tall guys for elbows even when they're tucked to the body and the shorter guy runs into him, and strong guys for ragdolling smaller guys in run of the mill hits. |
