Ya that was a rough ride to give to a rookie, but that play happens several times a year. The only things I can see wrong with it is lack of restraint shown against hitting a rookie and the utter lack or response by the Canuck players. Even after the play was shown they did nothing about it.

Canuck players and fans should be upset at themselves and the team for not sticking up for a teammate especially a rookie, why the hell is everyone else all bent out of shape over it I have no idea?
This isn't ringette guys!

I don't know, scoring the game winner shortly after is rubbing his face in it isn't it? At least that's what I hear from coaches a lot when this time of thing happens. Win the game not the fight? Well they won.

Gutless piece of poop. Hope someone gives Matheson a good old flying elbow at full speed heading in the opposite direction.

Well, they do penalize tall guys for elbows even when they're tucked to the body and the shorter guy runs into him, and strong guys for ragdolling smaller guys in run of the mill hits.
- Wetbandit1

You're a f***ing moron if you find that was a run of the mill hit. You're the problem. Gutless like the goons.

Who can't take him serious captain grammar ? You ? Your sentence lacks an "I". It should read: "I can't take you serious" not simply "can't take you serious". Go crawl back under a rock.
- Twisted schism

Pretty funny actually. Complaining about grammar and then making a grammatical error themselves. It is seriousLY. An adverb. Not serious.

I'm from Newfoundland. Considering you only found 2 things to call me out on from about 10 posts means I could probably teach English at a university level back home.

Yes. You are clearly brilliant as your posts are such sparkling edifices of logic backing up your nuanced premise.

i do not understand the lack of respect the NHL players have for each other. they fought to be unified during the last negotiation with the owners and now that has gone by the way side. Couple that blatant disregard with guys like pronger and now parros making the decisions on suspensions and you get statements like "they were fined the maximum permissible per the CBA for $2500." OR you hear the 1 playoff game equals 3 reg season games rationale so they were suspended 1 playoff game crap.

This goes back to people blaming moore for putting himself in a "compromising position" and not bertuzzi driving him to the ice surface and ending his career. Total joke. Just do the fans a favor and dont pretend to go thru the motions of who is a "repeat offender".

The reality is that when the CTE lawsuits start coming in, then everyone will "get it" because the NHL does not have the deep pockets of the NFL. Belak, Potvin, Rypien, Boogaard all had no problems dropping the gloves and it lead to depression, drug use, suicide.

I get such a kick out of the 'lack of respect' in todays game. I get Ek does it for the hitz but the fact people think it's true is pretty comical.

This is the softest the game has ever been in it's history.

Guys have been two handed over head. Scott Stevens destroyed careers. Tie Domi beat the ever living poop out of people whether you wanted it or not. Bertuzzi broke a dudes neck. Mike Millbury beat a fan with his own damn shoe!

I beleive the Matheson hit on Pettersson was clearly premeditated and Preditory. Remember Matheson was exacting revenge for being to blame on Pettersson's first goal of the game being dangled hard and subsecquent other plays being dominated and made to look silly including just before the incident in question. Matheson was seemingly assigned to shadow Pettersson with little affect, he was embarrassed and had malicious intent. The hit is one thing, but when the vulnerable player is already falling to the ice you grab and throw downward with your weight and arms violently to make the impact more violent and inflict damage. I beleive it's blantent intent to injure. Roughing should of been called in the the heat of action but upon further review there is malicious intent. Of course no call was made as the ref was 5 feet away looking right at the player laying on the ice with a concussion from head impact. It was fitting that Bo Horvat schooled Matheson shortly there after with the game winner.

Brendan Morrison was one of the softest players to play the game...your view on this was obvious from your login name.

As a Canucks fan, I was appalled by the gutless actions of Mike Matheson, the abhorrent performance of the NHL officiating, and most importantly, Travis Green.

To not allow Gudbranson, Roussel, Virtanen, or Schaller to avenge the removal of Petterson by that Hershey squirt was an abomination. The Canucks have been far too weak-willed and feeble a team in the pushback department for the last few seasons that to not make Matheson eat ice or helmet was absolutely poor form.

I'm not sure Travis has what it takes. He should take his Buddha musings elsewhere.

That is a roughing minor at the most.... Unfortunate that the kid wound up injured, but that is not nearly as dirty as you are making it out to be. Hockey is a contact sport. If you don't like it, there's always swimming.

the more the league takes away the ability for players to take care of their own, the more this will happen. Get rid of the instigator penalty and the respect for other players will quickly return

I agree... This doesn't get nearly the attention it is getting if Petterson doesn't happen to get injured when he hits the ice. Its a shame that he got injured because he has been entertaining to watch. However the lack of size and ability to take a big hit is part of the reason these younger guys have been held out of the league for longer. And im a lightning fan who watches our smaller players get hurt every year by big (mostly legal) hits. Shame to see him go down but the result was unintentional

My initial reaction to that play was "WTF". My second was "Let's grab a cop and a D.A. (who watch hockey) and get them to look at the egregious ones (like this) and start calling this crap what is it. "Assault" ... make those thugs justify their actions to a judge

I'm pretty sure you'd be charged for shooting a puck at someone on a sidewalk, or throwing a football at their face in the mall...

This is totally irrelevant.
