So much impatience...they are 3-2 and Girgs has been one of their better forwards. Give it at least 10 games. Even then, Larsson as the 14th forward is fine. They won't all stay healthy for long.
- Lunaion

He's a waste of a roster spot, and generally not good

As for Girgs, yeah, he's been pretty good. Keep him in the lineup and put Sobotka in the press box; doesn't matter to me either way. The Sabres need Nylander to help spark some even-strength production with Berglund. Girgs/Sobotka/Larsson are impediments to creating a modern NHL roster. Gotta score more. They don't get it done

Did any one know that Alex Nylander's real name is....

Alexander Maximiliam Michael Junior Nylander Altelius

Well, if we didnt already know his dad is an A-hole, it's verified now.

I'm not defending Larsson so much as not needlessly waiving depth and not putting kids in the press box. The center depth in the organization is very week right now.

I don't like the idea of both Nylander and Thompson on this team right now. Thompson earned in his shot, in part because they are suddenly weaker at RW than LW. I'd give him a little more time before I make a move there.

Just not sold on that pairing. If they limit their minutes significantly, it will be encouraging. Although I suspect Bogo will get hurt by his 3rd shift.
- mhp

I don't imagine they get much, if at all, above 14 minutes.

I like the sens strategy here with how they're using their d-men. Granted, they went with seven, but the same thing can and should be applied here. Just spread Jaros' 9 mins around the 6 other guys TOI. Still works out pretty well.

I'd be absolutely stunned if Larsson were claimed off waivers, and idk what you're talking about. We have 8 centers on the team without Larsson - Eichel, Mitts, Berglund, Sobotka, Erod, Girgensons, Reinhart (in a pinch, is better than Larsson), Wilson

As for Thompson, he earned his spot entirely because of the second clause in that sentence. Nylander earned a spot on this team, and he could still have one. There is no NHL rookie limit, and no reason not to do it

We don't agree on much of anything here.

Surely you can think of a reason not to have Nylander up. It's not indefensible. It's a standard JB decision and was easy to see coming.

Yeah, absolutely. It was still the wrong decision though. Nylander won a roster spot with his play. Anyone who watched the games saw how well he played, but it didn't matter. They had decided months ago he wasn't going to make the team. Continuing to give guys like Larsson a job only prolongs the inevitable, and it does so at the expense of the team, and especially at the expense of the fans.

Did he? Nylander had 6 solid pre season games, which were preceded by two years of head scratching.

Thompson last year had 18 points in 30 games in the AHL, 16 of those points were primary.

Giving Nylander the roster spot based on 6 games is no different than when people were calling Foligno the next Jarome Iginla after his 12 game run.

Edit: extreme example sure but 6 or so preseason games doesn't erase 2 years worth of "what the (frank) is he doing".

I don't see why the conversation is Nylander and Larsson. Nylander isn't here because Sheary, Skinner, and Sobotka are the top 3 LW's.

I do agree that there wasn't spot there for him to win, and I have no problem with that.

That's what my original point was. Put Sobotka down a line and play Nylander with Berglund. Hence Girgs in the press box and Larsson waived.

There was a spot for him to win with Berglund, and he won that spot. We all saw him do it. Housley and Botterill just took the easy way out where no vets got waived. It was the wrong call, and unfair to Nylander as he clearly earned a spot, but it's their call

I think everyone gets too distracted by rookies in preseason. They got a ton of opportunity and ice time, but when things gets tough (like in Toronto or Pittsburgh), guys like Girgs and Sobotka are who they went to when the rookies faltered.

I just don't agree that Nylander clearly won a spot or that there's a reason to call him up and put Girgs in the press box. Girgs beat him out and plays a very valuable role for this team.

Nylander had what, 4 or 5 points? How on Earth did Girgs beat him out?

But putting Nylander on the 4th line for 8 minutes a night is the wrong thing to do. Either Nylander is Top 9 (should be Top 6) or he truly is Bustlander.

As a defensive 4LW + PK? I think he was the clear winner.
