The Sabres are likely to have a cap overage this year. I find it odd that anyone who has opened cap friendly thinks they can cram another 5-10m in there.

Even those who get that they'd need to move money out don't grasp that this team is not at a stage where they should pay futures to move contracts. It's the exact opposite, they are taking on salary to add futures. The window for this team to contend opens in about 2 years. There's no need to pull a GMTM and try to accelerate that.

We got rid of most of our offensive output in Kane and O'Rielly.

I'd love to see how the Sabres would've been with both still here. I believe we could've gotten Thompson just for clearing cap space for St. Louis, which means 1 less 1st rd protected draft pick.

Still, there is lots of dead space coming off the books over the next two seasons. I'm hopeful Botts can finagle us a deal to move Okposo or Berglund early for space. Tough sell, but we have some assets to help move them if we need to methinks.

There's a small window, but then you have to sign Sam, Mittelstadt, Dahlin + address the top 4 D and goalies. Add a Skinner extension and the $ is adding up fast. Skinner, Dahlin, Casey, and Sam probably cost over 30m.
